Open Thread

Hey folks…so going into the weekend, there usually isn’t much to post or even talk about. So..since we don’t have a message board or forums section, I decided to do a little open thread for once. So…here is your chance to post anything that is on your mind. You can post some music, videos (work safe only), or just rant and rave. So, lets hear it…

Project Runway: And the Winner Is…

Click here to view Christian’s collection

I haven’t talked about it on the site yet, but I love Project Runway! Last night was the finale and the person I’ve been rooting for all season won- Christian! I’ll admit that the thing that makes me like him the most is how hilarious he is. He is so conceited,self-assured, and the way he talks makes him so endearing.

On the finale, Jillian had a nice collection…I liked the sweaters and her clothes looked great, but it really lacked cohesion. Also, she didn’t do an evening gown that blew me away. Click here to view Jillian’s Collection

Rami also had a pretty good collection, but like the judges said his color choices were odd. His fuchsia and neon blue clothes weren’t the hotness. I don’t know where he was coming from with that at all. Click here to view Rami’s Collection

Christian’s collection was the most dramatic and I give him kudos for using so many Black woman and recognizing the fierceness that we have too!

Did anyone notice that Jaslene from Top Model was one of Jillian’s models? She looked fantastic and she worked the runway. Also…I spotted Lauren from the current season of top model as the train-wreck model that Rami pointed out. Was she serious? I don’t know the timing of when Top Model was taped and when this finale was taped, but assuming this took place after Top Model then damn she didn’t learn sh!t!
Anyways, I’m happy with Christian winning…he and his collection are fierce!

What do you guys think of the finale? Did Christian deserve to win? Who deserved to be in the final three? Overall wasn’t there a lack of talent this season (i.e. Sweet Pea and 6 other people)?

Must Watch: Making the Band 4- Dawn Tackles her Katrina Issues & A Romance Blossoms

So last night I watched Making the Band 4 and although I’ve always been a huge fan of the show and it how it shows the recording process…last night’s episode with its focus on Dawn was really touching. If you’re a fan of the show then you probably know that Dawn was a Hurricane Katrina evacuee. She was forced to sleep in her car for several days and her and her family lost everything they had worked for like so many people affected by the Hurricanes (Katrina and Rita). The show did a great job of showing the kind of mental and emotional wreck going through something like that can take on people. It’s definitely an episode worth checking out (although I admit I skipped through most of Donnie’s parts).

It’s good to see a heartfelt and honest portrayal of people on a reality tv show where most shows tend to create these buffoonish characters. I’m glad that there is a show like MTB4 that shows women getting along and Black women as multi-dimensional to show a contrast to the loud mouth, catty, ignorant b!tches on shows like Flavor of Love. I also have to say that her and Q’s courtship/flirtation kinda made me go “awwwww”. I personally hate dating, but one of the best things about it is that time where you start to realize that you both are feeling each other and it looks like it might be blossoming into something special. According to recent interviews Q and Dawn aren’t actually together (but then again does anyone ever admit to a relationship at first?)…so it’s likely that their flirtation never blossomed into much…but I still think it is cute. I’m interested to see how this shapes up in the future episodes.  At the very least I thought it was really sweet how he opened to her about losing his father and the sincerity they showed in their feelings.

Did you check out last night’s episode? Are Dawn and Q as a couple growing on you? Isn’t it crazy how living through something like Katrina can permanently alter how you approach life? What do you think about the brewing feud between Robert and Brian that next week’s previews showed in full effect?

Watch & Comment: “We Are The Ones”- Another Star-Studded Barack Obama Tribute

Will.I.Am tapped a new group of celebrity friends to talk about why they are supporting Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign and set it to new music. This one doesn’t have the same emotional pull as “Yes We Can”, but it is fantastic to see how more and more people are jumping on board his campaign and starting to believe in his message. I think the most important thing to recognize is how people are using their voice. Less people are apathetic and standing silent on the sidelines and that is exactly what this country needs. “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Appearing in the video are: Will.I.Am, Jessica Alba, Kerry Washington, Ryan Phillipe, George Lopez, John Leguizamo, Luis Guzman, Macy Gray, Tichina Arnold, Tyrese, Zoe Kravitz, Regina King, and many more. Check it out.

What do you guys think of this video? Some people have said that making a song about politics or a politician is creepy, but I have to challenge…is making a song about drugs, violence, hoe’n (for lack of a better term lol), etc. supposed to be better? Isn’t it great to hear people speaking out for a positive cause?

Mini Reviews- Janet Jackson: Discipline, Erykah Badu- New Amerykah

Janet Jackson- Discipline: HOT! This is a great dance album, so much energy, and Janet’s swagger is incredible. She is back!

Erykah Badu- New Amerykah: It pains me to say this but I’m not feeling this at all on any level. I love Badu, but I can’t get with this. I get it, she is going for the Black Militant/Hip Hop consciousness thing so I’m sure people who don’t want to seem un-enlightened will be reluctant to criticize…but I really don’t give a damn. I’ll give her cool points for tackling some serious issues, but on the other hand she totally abandoned addressing more personal aspects of life. The highlight of the album to me was the only genuinely personal song “Me”. She should have tried to find some sort of balance. With that said there are a few good songs, but nothing on the level of anything on Mama’s Gun.

Perhaps if some of her songs weren’t so lazy then I could give her a half a pass, but when you have a song like “My People” that starts off promising but just turns out to be 4 minutes of her repeating “Hold on my people” it just doesn’t cut it. Think about it…this is the same person who once sang ”But everybody wanna ask me why,What good do your words do, If they can’t understand you, Don’t go talkin’ that shit Badu, Badu”. Did she just give up?
Have you guys checked out these albums? What is your take? Are there any other disgruntled Badu fans out there or are you happy she took a totally different direction?

What is Your “Stipper Song”?

I’m going to let you guys in on a little secret…there is one song that I call my “stripper song”. No…I have not and will never be a stripper, but I call it that because I think every woman has a song that makes them go “if I was ever a stripper this would be my theme song” lol. Cameo’s “Candy” is that track for me. I love old school and everything about this song makes me just want to get my groove on. Since I haven’t posted any other videos today, I’m going to throw this one up for good measure.

What is your stripper song? (Fellas I’m sure ya’ll have stripper songs too) lol.

Grammy Recap: Amy Winehouse & Kanye West Win Big + Performances

So last night the Grammys went down and it was actually a very entertaining show! There were some pretty great performances and even some touching moments. It’s late and I’m tired so I won’t go too in depth, but here are a few thoughts.

1) How INCREDIBLE was Kanye West’s performance of an updated “Hey Mama”? Of course his performance of Stronger with Daft Punk was stellar as well, but his vulnerable and touching tribute to his mom was a tear jerker. Nobody can deny that this man is an artist and in musical genre where so much is based on fantasy (focusing on fame and fortune) it is always refreshing to see him tap into something real. It is that authenticity that makes him one of the top artists in the game. Also, props to him for telling the orchestra to stop the music (click here to watch) when he was giving remarks about his mother…show a little compassion people!

Super Tuesday Recap!

Super Tuesday was one helluva roller coaster for the Democratic candidates. Missouri was prematurely called for Hillary then had to be called for Obama, New Mexico couldn’t get their act together and took 3 days to figure out who the hell one the state, and there were some pretty big upsets. However, one thing is for sure- the fight for the nomination continues. At the end of this round, Obama is leading Clinton 910 delegates to 882. However, this race is most certainly going to be determined by super delegates.

The media largely called Super Tuesday a draw, but considering that Obama overcame 20 and 30 point deficits to be competitive and even win in many states, I consider the victor. Clinton has been the “inevitable” candidate for the past year, so for Obama to still be in the running with the momentum in his direction it speaks volumes about his campaign and the movement. However, there is still a long way to go, and it ain’t over til it’s over.

I had the pleasure of attending the LA Election Results party for Obama and even though it royally sucked that Obama didn’t win California I still had a blast. They gave out these dope t-shirts they were making on the spot for free and the atmosphere was buzzing. LA is already a pretty diverse place, but the best thing was meeting people from different backgrounds who had no reservations in striking up convos simply because you don’t look like them. If only the country could be that united and kumbaya-ish then the world would be a better place lol. Anyway…that is my belated two cents. Here is another superb speech Obama delivered on Super Tuesday….and before ONE more person says he has no substance visit: www.BarackObama.com for information about his policies and plans for America

New Music Video: Will.I.Am’s Obama Tribute “Yes We Can” featuring John Legend, Common, Scarlett Johansson, Tatyana Ali, Nicole Scherzinger & More; Plus Everday People for Obama

A dozen celebrities such as John Legend, Common, Scarlett Johansson, Tatyana Ali, Nicole Scherzinger, Hill Harper, Herbie Hancock, Kate Walsh, Esthero, Tracee Ellis Ross, Taryn Manning, Fonzworth Bentley, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Kelly Hu, Amber Valetta, Nick Cannon, Adam Rodriguez, and more came together in support of Will.I.Am’s song “Yes We Can” inspired by Barack Obama’s New Hampshire speech…I’ve listed most of them in the title and is truly a remarkable thing to see so many celebrities unite around Obama’s message of hope and change. In a country that has been so divided for so long, there are a lot of celebrities that don’t want to go out on a limb and support a candidate at the risk of losing fans…however, these celebrities have put their belief and conviction that Obama is the right man for this country above the fear of a backlash. So that got me thinking…

It is my turn to stop saying “I’m not saying you should vote for Obama” and have enough conviction to say “Obama has the desire and determination to heal this nation and I urge you to vote for him. “If people have a problem with me saying that, then oh well. With hundreds of thousands of people across the country of all backgrounds, races, incomes, genders, religions, and every other classification we are broken into, are ending the reign on complacence and apathy and getting involved in the cause to make the country a better place for all people, I would be totally remiss for not using the platform that I have to speak out. I enthusiastically support Obama not only because of his ability to inspire, but because he has a solid plan for getting this country on the right track with his health care, economic, education, and Iraq proposals. If you are one of those people that says “Obama gives great speeches but doesn’t have any substance”, then download “Blueprint for Change- Obama’s Plan for America”  or www.BarackObama.com to get informed.

In my eyes this election isn’t simply a matter of ”who has been in public office the longest”, it is a matter of “who has the best vision for the future and is making it a priority to unite this country and inspire change”. I’m for unity and I’m for person I believe can best achieve that- Barack Obama, because  ”united we stand divided we fall”.  Yes we can- Si Se Puede!!!

What do you guys think of Will.I.Am’s music video? Isn’t it great to see a focus on celebrities doing something productive rather than what parties they are attending and who they are sleeping with? Are you an Obama supporter? Why are you supporting Obama?

*Please post a link of a picture of you and/or your friends in your Obama gear if you have one, and I will edit this post with to include the “everyday people” pictures as I get them!

Ask Reecie Advice Column: “Why Don’t Women Appreciate Nice Guys?”

A question that has been posed so many times to me and has been the spark of many debates is simply: “why don’t women appreciate nice guys?” I’m going to try my best to break down my answer in a way that men can truly understand without sounding like a total b!tch lol.

For starters, there is only one TRUE type of “nice guy” when it comes to romantic relationships with women: the “I’m a nice guy looking for a committed relationship” guy. That statement alone probably eliminates a good 60% of the people griping about a lack of appreciation. Of course there are many qualifying factors in addition to wanting a relationship, but that is the foundation for how you will be received and treated by women. Also, being a nice guy doesn’t guarantee you success 100% of the time, but more on that later for the 40% of the guys still remaining.

The problem is that a lot of men don’t realize that they aren’t really “nice guys”. Most often when you ask a man what makes him a nice guy he will respond with, “I never disrespect a woman, I don’t hit women, I always pick up the tab” etc. etc. First of all…some things, like being respectful and nonviolent, are BASIC traits that any decent human being would possess. Secondly, there is a difference between doing nice things and BEING a nice guy. Paying for a date is a nice thing to do, but that alone is not enough. You can pay for all the meals, drinks, movies, etc. that your wallet can stand, but if you are not looking for a relationship and the woman you are dealing with is, it means absolutely nothing. Chances are when all is said and done, she is going to think you’re an a$$hole…because like I stated earlier, if you’re not the “nice guy looking for a committed relationship guy” then you probably fall under the category of “he could be a nice guy if he wasn’t so full of sh!t”. Sounds a little harsh? Let me explain…
