Shawn Corey Carter, better known as Jay-Z and America’s favorite adorned “hustler turned rapper,” provides us yet again another installment and view into a story that lurks in the shadows and crawls through the soul of America’s history. This history, as some would say it, is controlled through manifest destiny- the art of expansion, the craving to seek what’s rightfully yours, and most importantly, to claim that stake…..by any means necessary. “American Gangster” is not only a concept album. It’s so much more than that. It is a living testament to all the rights and wrongs that has taken place in America since the advent of narcotics and organized crime, thus giving birth to The American Gangster and the “Gangster mentality….created by the White, mastered by the Black and absorbed by the Fiends, taxed by the Governmentality, [and] chartered by Forbes.”
Through the album, Jay-Z bobs and weaves through a myriad of topics that a true American Gangster has experienced. At the end of it all, whether good or bad, “either you’re somebody or you ain’t nobody.” Yes!!! That’s the American way…not because Jay-Z said so, but because you live it every single day. “American Gangster” the album, the saga, the life….
“Intro”- This is one of Jay-Z’s most prolific openings probably since Reasonable Doubt. Through an excellent performance by Idris Elba, we get a real understanding that being a gangster isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Like manifest destiny, there are spoils, but like any illegal game, death is always around the corner. And death, while being a gangster has taken place not only on the streets, but also in the government. I credit Jay-Z for giving us a great intro filled with tension, anticipation, and vivid story-telling. 5/5
“Pray”- I would say this track in somewhat of a prequel to “Allure.” Jay-Z gives us a sort of coming of age track where he drives us through streets where that grew him, raped his innocence, and replaced it a complex view of what law enforcement means- “a treasure chest was removed, cops said he’ll be back next month. What we call corrupt he calls payin’ dues.” He understands he’s not angel and the only thing he can do is pray to the Lord for forgiveness. Puff and the Hitmen with vocals from Beyonce really hit it out of the park on this track. Monster!!! 5/5
“American Dreamin”- Anything with Marvin Gaye on it is an instant classic. Lol. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album. Puff & The Hitmen do it big on the production again. This is a beautifully written song as Jay once again captures an early state of mind about being caught up in a game that feeds to souls that don’t have shit and want it now. For some, the way out is college. For Jay, the way out is through snow…or as he called it Snidos. Lol. I think one of the most poignant lines were “survive the droughts, I wish you well. How sick am I?” It’s almost as if Jay is conflicted with his earlier perverse thoughts and wanting a better insight in the world around him. I haven’t seen this kind of Jay in a very long time. 5/5
“Hello Brooklyn” ft. Lil Wayne”-AND I AIN’T GOT NO COMMENT ON THIS SHEEEEEEIT. 2/5
“No Hook” – HA!!!! “Had to get some challah bread so you can holla back at” That’s my line boi. Jay’s flow on this track was ridic. “roids, rolls royce keep my movements, smooth while maneuvering through all the manure in the sewer that I grew up in” I liked the track except where he spoke about Dehaven. Cmon Hov, you shoulda kept that movin. 4/5
“Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)…”– L’chayim!!! 5/5
“Sweet”- Jay-Z takes a piece of the movie where Frank’s mother had told him that he could have been anything else in the world and his younger brothas would have followed in his footsteps. He starts off the song by sayin that his nephews would also do the same but they also challenged him by asking if he was ashamed of the life he led and preaches. His response is, “I can walk down the halls of mirrors in Versailles and be so satisfied when I look at myself in the eyes, no shame, no sir” I found that comment to be so intriguing because indeed there is nothing to be proud of in being a gangster but Jay continues to follow the same rules that he’s been speakin’ about since 1996….”Gotta learn to live with regrets.” 11 years later and he’s still not making excuses or apologies and he’s being his own man and always being real. He threads a similar cloth Frank Lucas was hemmed on….Nobody owns him and indeed it may not be what you call perfect but it’s his life. And who’s life is perfect right? Another Puff & Hitmen monster… 4.5/5
“I Know” - When I first listened to the track, I wasn’t impressed. I listened to it another 5 times and also tied in the imagery in the movie and thought this song was brilliant. He took the essence and feel of “Excuse Me Miss” and turned it into about a love tale around the destructive force of heroin. “Just for one night baby take me in vein.”- CRAZY!!! In a complex and twisted artistic way, if you played this song in the background of the scenes where you saw all those black ppl in the movie with needles in their arms, it would cause a certain shiver in your spine. There’s something very twisted, very addictive about this song and it took me a while to appreciate it. Big up Neptunes for the track!!! 4.2/5
“Party Life” - Okay, so this is another song that just annoyed the hell out of me when I first heard it but, like “Sweet,” when I put it in context with the movie, there was a point in the movie where these gangsters were really feelin’ themselves talkin about how much money they had and how ill their furs were. I mean Frank Lucas walkin up in the boxin’ match with that fur is mad cocky! lol. Like, who is he? Better seats than all of em’ and shakin’ the hands of boxing legends. A pimp’s anthem indeed. Plus, who can deny the sample? Jay’s wittiness on this track is ridic. lol. “Whatup Randy?” lol… This track is either love or hate….gotta love it…..yaaaaa diiiiiiig? Guru, Puff & Hitmen givin that funk!!! 4/5
“Ignorant Shit”- Umm….considering I was one of the many who heard this about 3-4 years ago, I will just say that I like the original better sans Beanie’s verse. Regarding his statement about Imus, that’s real talk….”till we all without sin, let’s quit the pulpittin” 4/5
“Say Hello” - I’m only feelin’ the third verse on this track but I am also concerned about his Jena Six comment. Yeah I feel what you’re sayin hovie but where were you when all that was poppin off? It’s almost like “Minority Report” We can comment, complain, and report about the matters but what are we really doing to combat the issues? I’m still unsure about this track. N/A
“Success”- Jay and Nas went in on this track and it’s a very important subject to discuss- Success. It’s evident that Nas and Jay are just different kind of emcees and you have to give them their respect when their in their own zone. I preferred “Black Republicans” more though. I didn’t really like the whole “Let that bitch breathe” thing. “Google Earth Nas i got flats in other continents” lol. “I used to give a fuck, now I give a fuck less” lol…crazy….jay’s first couple of lines were on point!!! No I.D, i see you mang!!! 3.9/5
“Fallin”- Oh my…Jay’s a beast on this track. Jermaine Dupri production? couldn’t believe it. I love this…..i like the smoothness and sleek of the chorus and the rawness and grit of the verses. Jay proves that he hasn’t missed a step on that straight flow, straight rap, straight at your neck type cridddack!!! “Damn gravity’s ill” love that line… The story-tellin on this track is beautiful…he touches so many different topics and it’s great to see Hov have tracks like “Success” and “Fallin” come one after another. Excellent juxtaposition. I love the piano and instruments towards the end of the track. Ugggh…greatness 5/5
“Blue Magic”- BROOKLYN STAND UP!!!! This track ooozes crack. lol. Too many stand out lines on this track. Finally , aPharrell chorus that I love. Gotta big up En Vogue for that “Hold On” joint! “Blame Reagan for makin me into a monster, blame Oliver North when I ran contra” daaaaaamn! MY MAN! Crazy thing, I could actually see Biggie doing this track and murdering it just with the swag and the grit in his voice. 5/5
“American Gangster“- JUSTIN BLAZE AND THE BLAZETTES….crazy. Jay’s flow is untouchable over this track. I WANT THE SKY BABY!!! What an excellent ending to an album that gives us passion, terror, fiends, love, death, family, friends, enemies, and then some….this is an undeniable track and when I first pressed the forward button from track 14 to track 15 in the wip, i almost thought i was gonna lose my damn mind. I had to pull the wip ova and celebrate. lol. Instruments, horns, piano, everything…..LOVIN IT!!! 5/5
FINAL RATING- 4.4/5
This rating, to some, might be a little low. I think it’s quite fitting. Some may even say, “damn, why not just go for the 4.5?” The answer is this: While I believe this is a great album and Jay-Z really came back strong, I am a little concerned that albums surrounding topics of drugs and gangster life are so appealing in America. I suppose this is more of a case of morality for me. I am also betwixt certain emotions of whether Jay-Z has anything else to write about. One of my boys said that saying “American Gangster” was a concept album was just a cop out and gave Jay-Z an excuse to rap about drugs once again since “Kingdom Come” was ummm…”too sophisticated?” Well, Mr. Carter, I for one am an intelligent consumer and my reasonings for not liking KC had nothing to do with my lack of sophistication…But that’s neither here nor there. The fact of the matter is is that drug tales sell. This is something that we, as consumers, really need to internally analyze. Some would also say that tales of rags to riches…ergo, the Horatio Alger affect, are appealing. That being true, how many times are we going to get the same dose from Hov? If all we can expect is drug stories and a drug album from Jay and all the Jay-ettes out there then are we just as Ignorant as he? I don’t know….All in all, I like this album a lot and I definitely recommend it’s purchase for those who didn’t buy “Kingdom Come.”
Apologies for the wait but hope ya’ll feel it!
L’chayim bitches!!!! lol

Ruduloph Giuliani!!!
For too many people, that name rings a myriad of tunes. For some who have never been natives of New York City and just got hip to “Rudy,” he’s the guy you may call “America’s Mayor.” For those who’ve listened to East Coast rap for the last 15 years, you may have heard his name being thrown under the bus quite a few times by just about every NY rapper in the scene. He’s been called everything from a racist and bigot to a hero and as some would say, “America’s Next President!”
The title of this post is called “The Fiber of a President.” For those who are not aware, Giuliani and his current wife have each been married three times (if you do the math, thats six different spouses.) If you read the hyperlinked article, a supporter in Clinton’s corner, stated that Giuliani’s personal decisions and experiences in his home make him an unfavorable candidate for Presidency. In regards to Giuliani, he states, “I think America has to look at all these things, and there are enough moles on this man that embarrasses those of us who have sought public life“That individual goes on to further say that it speaks volumes for someone like Hillary to have publically gone through a marital storm and still stay in the marriage and support her husband. Those actions, he believes, show a certain level of dedication and credibility that makes Hillary a better choice.
I have watched interviews where Giuliani expresses that his personal life is very different from his political/business life and that both entities should not be put in the same fish bowl for public scrutiny. Giuliani believes that his actions and role during 9/11 speaks to his dedication, resolve, and ability to lead America as its next President.
So what do you think folks? Do you think the above case is proof that Giuliani can’t be an effective leader and President? Isn’t there something to be said about a President whose home is in tact? Were the comments made by Clinton’s supporter just political propaganda?
Let’s dialogue!!!

When I first read about this, I thought that this was a very positive and intriguing space that BET moved into. From it’s popular College Hill programming comes Interns, which serves as a spin-off and jab to those who feel/felt that BET ain’t about anything progressive. This new show, premiering Oct. 23rd, will follow 10 college students from disparate colleges and universities in their quest to dominate and come out successful during a summer internship in what Common calls the “city with the frozen sun” bka Chicago.
These students will all be residing under one roof for the duration of the internship and will also be mentored by New York Times best-selling author and medical expert, Dr. Ian Smith, who will be with them as they engage in trials that will test their academic wit, business acumen, marketing strategies, et. al Further challenges will definitely arise as they will need to learn strong concepts in time management while working individually and in teams. As these 10 interns will lead somewhat autonomous lives away from their families, they will also be exposed to the Chicago nightlife and get into some things that i’m sure will be entertaining to watch…..Real-World esque you may say? Naaaaah, College Hill: Interns….tune it and enjoy!
Here’s the roster:
Tationna, 19 (Bronx, New York)
This self-proclaimed “diva” attends City College of New York. Not one to be out done by the rest, this young woman takes prides in her appearance and always needs to look her best–even if that means wearing pearls and high heels to the construction site. Her approach to projects may sometimes be more flirtatious and less about actually doing the work. Tationna is not shy to tell you that the she is above certain assignments and you better not ask her to get you coffee or make copies.
Kathy, 20 (Homewood, IL)
Drive and passion are just two words that describe this Southside Chicago native. Kathy is a natural born leader and taskmaster. This self-possessed woman allows nothing to stand in the way of her goals. All work and no play would make Kathy a dull girl and she can’t have that. When her work is done, Kathy enjoys having cocktails, burning up the dance floor, and flirting. It has been said that an internship is good for self-discovery and Kathy’s true character will be examined during the season when a major secret is revealed.
LeTia, 21 (Chicago, IL)
Attends Chicago State University and aspires to attend medical school. A native of the area, Letia is often a good resource but her roommates question her desire to be a part of the team. Deeply connected to her family and head over heels in love with her boyfriend, work/life balance definitely becomes her challenge.
Marc, 22 (Atlanta, GA)
The former captain of his college basketball team at Southern Tech University, this good-looking young man walks in as a BMOC (Black Man In Charge). At 6′5″ he is a presence in any room and he instantly commands the attention of the ladies. This business mogul in the making aspires to be a sports agent with a multifaceted conglomerate. Will he lose focus along the way while surrounded by his female roommates?
Spencer, 19 (Jacksonville, North Carolina)
The son of a preacher, this young man has the expectation bar set for him. Seemingly, he is mature beyond his years–noted by his unique sense of style, but perceptions are not always true. Shiny suits and electric blue socks can’t hide Spencer’s immaturity. This wet behind the ears student shows his age with petty arguments and elementary school yard fighting. As this young brother stands up for what he believes in, others often try to squash his opinions. Spencer attends North Carolina University.
Ivy, 23 (Tampa, Florida)
This University of South Florida sorority girl is the true definition of the “quiet storm”. Usually flying under the radar, she is a powerhouse of organization and event planning. She may be meek on the outside, but she backs down to no one.
Jenna, 21 (St. Louis, MO)
A student at the University of St. Louis, this statuesque basketball playing video girl turned PR apprentice has the smile to win you over and attitude to put you in your place. As the “beautiful” girl that has been told that few compare to her, she will attempt to force others to conform to her way of thinking…at any cost.
Lonnie, 21 (Glendale, CA)
A recent graduate of Prairie View A&M University, Lonnie is like an older brother who constantly calls you out while getting you to laugh at yourself. Quick with a joke or to bust on someone, Lonnie thinks that he is the coolest thing to hit Chi-town since Michael Jordan. He brings some business savvy to the mix as well. He can sell snow to a polar bear…when he wants to. Sometimes, his need for “cool points” can be an impediment.
Maurice, 21 (Las Vegas, NV)
The ladies’ man of the group, this Morehouse student excels in the bedroom and the boardroom. As the quiet smooth guy of the group, you never know what you will get from this intern. He’s one that may deliver you the unexpected.
Kasheef, 22 (Boston, MA)
This frat boy is always up in the mix. He likes to party, but he is one of the first guys to hold it down for his team. This man is a player in the club and all business in the boardroom. The ladies love Kasheef and any employer would like to have him on their payroll.

I could be seriously mistaken but this tragedy didn’t get the kind of press that the shooting @ Virginia Tech received. Nevertheless, it just seemed to me that this situation kind of came and then it went. But what went down is seriously another alarming cause of alarm that something’s terribly going wrong with our young kids in school. Without trying to go into my usual reminisces about proverbial “hay-days” in school, I just feel that shyt like this didn’t pop off when I was younger. You didn’t hear a lot of cases of young kids goin for gusto on a campus….I’m sure it happened and maybe I wasn’t paying attention but I’m just seeing more and more of these cases taking place as of recent, especially ever since the notorious Columbine massacre.
So, for those who don’t have a clue as to what I’m really talking about, here’s the net-net of the story. Let’s go to Cleveland, OH and enter the halls of a highschool by the name of SuccessTech Academy, an alternative high school in the public school district that stresses technology and entrepreneurship for about 240 students, most of them black, with a small number of white and Hispanic students. The school shooting that took place there on Oct. 10th resulted in the death of the shooter, Asa Coon, who took his own life, and the injuring of several students and teachers. While it’s a fortunate situation that none of the shooter’s victims died during the assault, what’s more disturbing is that school officials and security were previously aware that Asa (sorry, i just get a sharp ping in my neck using his last name) had some serious issues. Even close friends to him knew he wasn’t all together. One of his people’s stated, “He said if he did shoot up the school he’d let me and some other dude he knew go and all that, but I didn’t think he actually meant that…….I thought he was just kidding around“
In 2006, Asa was put under psychological testing after he slapped his mother and was thus put in a shelter where he was made several suicidal attempts. A few days before the shooting, Asa was beat up by some students because of his “gothic” lifestyle, his atheist beliefs, and worshipping of Marilyn Manson. After what had to be years of mental & social anguish, Asa finally responded back….He was said to be wearing all black with a Marilyn Manson t-shirt on and black finger nails during the shooting. A few days before the shooting, he gave warnings to students and said, “I got something for ya’ll” but no one seemed to take him very seriously. One student did and made it a point not to attend school the day of the shooting.
New school, new city, same story….Why/How are kids getting to the point where they feel a need to do this? It doesn’t make sense for fingers to be pointed because what’s done is done but who do you feel is responsible? Could this have been prevented? Is the school system unable/incapable of detecting these signs before it’s too late? What’re your thoughts?

Last Sunday, Oct. 14th on Vh1, I peeped the new reality show of the Life & Times of Murder Inc’s boss, Irv Gotti (nee Irving Domingo Lorenzo, Jr.) I’m not up on the reality show bit like many people but for the ones I pay attention to, i’ll take a crack and speak on it. So the show opens up speaking about the rise of Gotti’s empire and unstoppable hits with acts such as Ja Rule, Ashanti, et. al. His zenith saw a sharp decline when he was faced with multi-million dollar money laundering charges where his label was seized as well as tons and tons and tons of gwop…..Though he beat the charge (remember when he left that building all propped up on the shoulders of them dudes? lol) he faced something he never thought would happen- a loss of respect and credibility in the game.
With his new reality show, we follow Irv as he gives us a glimpse in the life of his family, his kids, and his “wife” as well as his process in rebuilding acts like Ja Rule and reclaiming what once was his and most importantly, getting that respect from his peers. So how was the first show? I liked it a lot actually. I always saw Irv as a comedian and a jokester but I really noticed how focused he is in getting his business back in shape. He and Ja were in the studio deciding what track to pick as a single and you could see that although Ja was more focused on just putting out “anything,” Irv was more concerned with putting out the “right thing.” I respected that about him and it takes a certain level of poise and business acumen to act like that. Irv said something during the show that made me ponder…he said, “This music industry scares me!”or something to that extent…..I suppose, from what he went through, he clearly sees how easy it is to go from #1 to nothing at all….I hope he goes in with a new focus cause even though I wasn’t really a fan of Ja/Ashanti era/music, I can always appreciate the hustle……
Aside from the music, we also got a glimpse into his family life and the dynamics between he and his “wife,” “BM,” “FWB,”….. whatever you call it. What’s interesting is that, and i’m not saying that she is, but his wife really is portrayed like a gold digga and really out for self…..I suppose in a way, being the wife of such a celebrity, you have to have a certain sense of “i’m get mines regardless.” During a lunch date between she and DMX’s wife you could see both women plottin’ to make sure that she’s taken care of and not left out in the cold as Irv re-pursues the building of his empire.
Anyway, who else peeped it? What were your thoughts? I think the Salt&Pepa and Irv Gotti shows are my top picks this season…..Don’t speak to me about I Love New York 2. lol

P.S: Recovering from the flu. Apologies for the hiatus…..hi haterz!
Nas is dat “Nigga?”

Our favorite Godson pka (previously known as) Esco has caught some backlash as of recent due to his decision to name his upcoming album “Nigger” aka “The N Word.” His recent interview with MTV had Nas defending the title stating that it shouldn’t be taken so seriously. He is trying to reach the streets and not reach the Civil rights generation that was affected by such an a caustic slur. Nas seeks to take the negativity out of the word by placing it in such a light. As comedian Jeff Foxworthy has clearly endeared the term “Redneck,” Nas is trying to take the sting out of it and put it back in the power of black people as he truly believes times have changed and audiences have clearly undergone transformation during that process.
Though Nas has clear intentions of flippin’ the script on the word, individuals like Jesse Jackson are throwing him under the bus saying that though he has a right to call his album “Nigger” he shouldn’t be glorifying it and that he should use his voice for uplifting and not degrading. In response to Jackson’s comments, Nas says, “And to my older people who don’t know who Nas is and who don’t know what a street disciple is, stay outta this (expletive) conversation. We’ll talk to you when we’re ready. Right now, we’re on a whole new movement. We’re taking power from that word“ Though Nas respects the old leaders, he feels that he is a new leader in this movement and wants to reach his audience in a way that they will listen to his message.
I think Nas’ approach and response to Jackson and other naysayers was right on! For individuals to automatically cast judgement on a title without confronting the artist or listening to the music first is not only unfair, but as Nas put it during his interview, “counter-revolutionary.” I think Nas did good by given respect to Jackson but tellin’ him the biz like a man. Thas’ wassup. I think Jackson & Co. really should take an L for this one. I’m with Nasir!
What’re your thoughts on this situation? Is Nas taking the whole term of endearment thing a lil too far or is this whole “N word” story a lil trite?

Alright so after the end of “Sopranos” and the season of “Entourage” I had a little void in my HBO series line-up. One day about a month ago, I was flipping the channel and came across the series premiere of HBO’s new porn show called “Tell Me You Love Me.” Straight up and down, this has got to be the rawest and realest show on television without actually pressing the “purchase show” button on your On Demand screen. So for those who do not have HBO and have never heard of the show before, here’s a synopsis:
The show traces the lives of four couples and the things they go through in their attempts to make the relationship work. Through vivid and controversial lens, we are able to capture the essence of each relationship from how each partner relates to one other on the emotional level down to their sexual activities. The latter is said to be one of the major reasons this show has gained a certain level of popularity because the angles from which those sex scenes are taped are just unreal for TV…yes, its HBO but “Tell Me You Love Me” is breaking some new grounds…..Anyway, with respect to the couples, we have:
1. Couple A: Married for about 13 years with two kids. Both husband and wife have reached a stage in their life when they’ve been over-consumed by their day-to-day responsibilities as parents that they have not had the chance to develop and/or foster their relationship as lovers. They haven’t had sex in a year…wife feels husband doesn’t want to have sex with her….husband feels pressured to have sex but makes it a point to masturbate whenever he gets a free moment away from the wife…..They both are currently seeking therapy to ameliorate their failing marriage….I have some personal thoughts about the husband but I won’t speak on that….yet! Tune it to watch what i’m talkin bout!
2. Couple B: Married for a couple years. Husband’s an architect, wife’s a lawyer and both are trying desparately to get pregnant. Actually, let me rephrase that….The wife is borderline psycho trying to get pregnant. Having sex has become more about trying to inseminate than it is actually making love. The husband feels like a resevoir of sperm for his wife that only has “Birth” on the brain. They’ve tried and tried but she just can’t get pregnant. In later episodes, she reveals to him that she had an abortion 10 years prior when she was in college…yada yada….the inability to get pregnant puts a stress on their relationship….Tune in for details on how they’re dealing with this situation.
3. Couple C: Actually, as of 3 episodes ago, they are no longer a couple. This relationship follows the psyche and emotional instability of a young girl who desparately wants the ideal “dog, cat, picket fence, husband-wife” story but in reality is overly jealous and needy. She’s admitted, during therapy, that she needs sex and men to make her feel whole and being alone makes her feel “useless.” In the first few episodes we saw the end of an engagement to a dude she loved to the start of a new dude who’s somewhat the male version of her. In her relentless ability to try to find some sense of “quam” she’s drawn back to da dick. Tune it to watch how she deals with her ex coming back in the picture and the new dude she’s f’ing.
4. Couple D: And probably one of the most disturbing couples to follow is a set of senior citizens whose sex life is better than all 3 of the other couples combined. The wife is actually the psychologist that the other couples go to for advice concerning their own relationship. Though she is a psychologist, there are underlying issues that are affecting her own marriage. Tune in to watch just what the hell im referring to. It’s some freaky ass shyt. lol.
So there it is, check out the show. Sundays 9pm EST on HBO. Who else watches the show? What’re your thoughts? Do you think it’s straight up porn or do you think that the storyline calls for such graphic scenes?
