Listen: Mariah Carey’s Next Single “Bye Bye”

Mariah Carey’s next single is called “Bye Bye”. It seems a little weird to release a song like this when she has such upbeat songs like “Touch My Body” and “Migrate”…this song is kind of a downer. Of course if you’ve just lost a loved one then it might make you feel better about it. I can’t imagine not turning the radio station when the song comes on though…this is just not the kind of song lyrically that I listen to on a regular basis. Click here to listen.

What do you guys think of this track? Do you think this is a good choice for a single?

OMG I love Mimi! She brought the house down when I saw her in concert. She so needs to duet with Eric Solomon. He’s my favourite, you guys should totally check him out: EricSolomonMusic.com

    as always - i feel you 100%…

WTF… DO NOT RELEASE A SINGLE TALKING ABOUT PUTTING YOUR HANDS TO THE SKY IF YOU JUST LOST YOUR GRANDMA.

    DAMN. WOMP WOMP.

“Bye Bye” is the song I care the LEAST about on that entire damn album. She’s got a couple screws loose if she thinks this is going to put her on top…

But of course you got loyalists like Anna up there talking about “I LOVE MIMI” - not even MENTIONING the single… I hate when artists feel so empowered by their fans that they just release trash because they know that they’re going to make it to #1 regardless.

C’MON - this is the ghetto’d-down/watered-down version of “One Sweet Day”.

    MC PALEEZ!!!!

I totally agree with Ryan on this one. All because you have a solid fanbase doesn’t give you the right to put out trash! Even though Mariah is a force to be reckoned with, its singles like this that bring the quality of her album down. This is almost as worse as that Rise Up song R-Kelly made, but I won’t even take it there. It reminds me of a low rate version of Yesterday by Leona Lewis.

I like the song and having recently experienced an unexpected passing of someone who was basically my Pops I can appreciate it. Also, knowing that this was created because she lost her Pops as well I can understand why its on the album. Its not a bad single choice but the song is a downer then coming behind Touch My Body and this being the start of the summer the timing seems really off. Having heard the album I wish they would of went with I Stay In Love, Side Effects, or even Love Story if a ballad just had to be released as the 2nd single. Personally I think they should of went with Cruise Control because that song has the potential to be a summertime banger.

  5. 5 viciuzurban April 11, 2008 at 8:29 pm

she lost her father not too long ago. so if its has some personal and healing significance for her then she has the right to release it as the single second. i know of many friends that have recently lost their grandmothers and cousins so its all good timing relative.

honestly the song is good but not great, considering its placement on the tracklist. i would have gone for i stay in love as 2nd single but thats just a personal choice. it doesnt really matter.

Based on Mimi’s track record I can see why it was picked. Her downtempo songs often fare better chartwise than her party tracks. I’m not sure about this one whoever. She will probably promote the hell out of it though.

alot of reviews on the web have called it a great album. a few dont even know what they are talking about. people here are the lyrics to “bye bye” so read it before posting bullshit.

This is for my peoples who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby, your man, or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye (no, no, no)
Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers, friends and cousins
This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers
Lift your hand to the sky ‘cause we will never say bye.

As a child there were them times
I didn’t get it but you kept me in line
    I didn’t know I didn’t show
    Sometimes on sunday mornings
    That I missed you
    I’m glad we talked through
    All them wrongful things
    Separation brings
You never let me know it
You never let it show because
    You loved me and obviously
There’s so much more left to say
If you were with me today face to face

    Chorus
I never knew I could hurt like this
And everyday life goes on like
“I wish I could talk to you for awhile”
“I wish I could try not to cry”
    As time goes by
And as soon as you reach a better place
Still I’ll give the whole world to see your face
And if I get next to you
It feels like you gone too soon
The hardest thing to do is say bye bye

Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye bye bye bye bye,
Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye.

And you never got the chance to see how good I’ve done
And you never got to see me back at number one
I wish that you were here to celebrate together
I wish that we could spend the holidays together
I remember when you used to tuck me in at night
With the Teddy Bear you gave me that I held so tight
[ Bye Bye lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]
I thought you were so strong
    You’d make it through whatever
It’s so hard to accept the fact you’re gone forever

    Chorus
I never knew I could hurt like this
And everyday life goes on like
“I wish I could talk to you for awhile”
“I wish I could try not to cry”
    As time goes by
And soon as you reach the better place
Still I’ll give the world to see your face
And if I get next to you
It feels like you gone too soon
The hardest thing to do is say bye, bye.

Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye bye bye bye bye
Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye.

This is for my peoples who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby, your man, or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye (no, no, no)
Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers, friends and cousins
This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers
Lift your hand to the sky ‘cause we will never say bye, bye.

    Chorus
I never knew I could hurt like this
And everyday life goes on like
“I wish I could talk to you for awhile”
“I wish I could try not to cry”
    As time goes by

Still I’ll give the world to see your face
And if I get next to you
It feels like you gone too soon
The hardest thing to do is say bye, bye.

Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye bye bye bye bye
Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye.
Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye bye bye bye bye
Bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye.

What’s up Reecie! Sorry I just got to u on this one,but on the road I use my blackberry curve phone and its just been acting up.anyway’s whose that guy RYAN’ he’s pretty on track with some of his views!
I agree with him in some aspects. I don’t think that all of Mariah’s songs are all that! and furthermore,tr all begining to sound the same! She’s not developing as an artist at all!!! she needs to grow with her songs but instead, its like she stuck in a rot and instead of pulling herself out she is just let’s hersef sink! She’s gona keep on until she drowns if she doesn’t grow up! Her videos are the same too! And all she does is touch her body(c,she even had to sing about it)! Mariah to me,is becoming soooo lame
! Is she gona keep on acting like the way she do! As she forgotten that she almost 40 yrs old. Please Mariah grow up,develope ! Remember that youth only last but so long but if u make songs that are long lasting and good,ul last for a long time in the music industry! And pleazeeeeee nomore touch my body songs! Tr sooo overrated.
Ps I also wana say that I like that song called “single again” by Trina! Its real good.Heaven by kyesha Cole and closer by my baby Ne*yo and llolipop by lil wayne are also some of my fav songs.please do some topics on Trina and more on my baby Shaffer Smith! As usual, love u Shaffer! Can’t wait ti c u.am just counting the dayssss.

  10. 10 jamaican woman April 12, 2008 at 8:52 am

I just read the words posted by Viciuzurban.and I have to admit that the lyrics aren’t bad at all !they work, becuse they’ll shore bring out the sadness in people! I get what Mariah is trying to bring forth! I am actually feeling this song in a way! Its different than the usual songs she sings. It makes me reflect on the ones that I’ve loved who I’ve lost way too soon!-It makes me miss them! And for that I wana say thank you Mariah! Keep growing in that way! Keep thinking bout u Shaffer Smith, all the time!

thank u viciuzurban for posting those words!

  11. 11 viciuzurban April 12, 2008 at 10:11 am

^lol didnt u post somewhere saying that she should grow up?

  12. 12 Ryan April 12, 2008 at 10:42 am

viciuzurban - I really hope you were not alluding to me reading those lyrics over listening to them to grasp the deepness that is Mariah Carey. If so, then let me say this: READING THE LYRICS is JUST AS BAD as LISTENING to them.

I don’t post bullshit - and I am NEVER quick to judge, especially MC. I give this woman the benefit of the doubt EVERY TIME - but today’s single has been MY LAST beneficiary.

When you go from the brilliance that was Butterfly to “This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers Lift your hand to the sky ‘cause we will never say bye.” - then you know something in the midst of things has gone terribly wrong.

“MY PEOPLES”? I want you to think hard on what audience she is projecting herself towards with these simple ass lyrics.

And then look at the audience she is placing herself in front of with these:

“When you love someone so deeply
    They become your life
It’s easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside
    Blindly I imagined I could
    Keep you under glass
Now I understand to hold you
I must open up my hands
    And watch you rise”

ARE YOU JOKING? Those are JUST the opening LINES… This woman HAS SAVED LIVES with her music - I’ve heard stories where listening to “Hero” has stopped people from committing suicide… That is brilliance… What you are standing up for is trash. Plain and simple.

It saddens me that she has to subject herself to this, but she has to make money and I understand that. I just will not support that, whatever “that” pertains to.

If the lines I provided were not enough - then please, let me finish the song for you…

    “Chorus

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
    Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
    Butterfly

    Verse

    I have learned that beauty
Has to flourish in the light
    Wild horses run unbridled
    Or their spirit dies
You have given me the courage
To be all that I can
And I truly feel your heart will
Lead you back to me when you’re
    Ready to land

    Chorus

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
    Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
    Butterfly

    Bridge

    I can’t pretend these tears
    Aren’t over flowing steadily
I can’t prevent this hurt from
    Almost overtaking me
But I will stand and say goodbye
    For you’ll never be mine
    Until you know the way
    it feels to fly

    Chorus

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
    Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
    Butterfly

    Chorus

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
    Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
    Butterfly
    So flutter through the sky”

DAMN THAT CONCEPT IS HARD FOR SOME PEOPLE TO GRASP - MUCH LESS PUT INTO WORDS! THIS IS GENIUS!

  13. 13 jamaican woman April 12, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Yes Viciuzurban,I did say that she needs to grow! And am not going back on what I said! She does need to grow.

One song, doesn’t prove that she has grown at all. I do still think that she is over rated and that the najority of her songs are the same olea, same ole! Same beat
    Same concept
    Same slutty video

But for that last song,(bye bye) it was just different! The words were good to me!I understood them.its hard for some people to grasp the true meaning of those words.but then again,if its not sung by the right person,it can easily go unapreciated!

In no means was she a lyrical genius or vocal genius in this song.but she wasn’t bad either! I appreciated the fact that she changed up a bit and that’s all am saying! The lyrics were just good in that aspect!

I can tell Visurbazan that ur a true fan and for that I appreciate u even more because am a true fan of shaffer smith a.k.a Ne*yo so I know what its like when u really think highly of an artist, even when others don’t!

And no RYAN,am not drawing reference to u on this one! I agree with a lot of ur opinions and the others I respect!

Love u Shaffer Smith and that song closer’!

  14. 14 viciuzurban April 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Lol hi ryan I think u may have misinterpreted my post. I was referring to the reviews on the web and simply just posted the lyrics for everyone to see. I see u Jamaican woman. There’s nothing wrong with reading lyrics to a song. I do it often and it seems like you do the same thing too. If u felt in any way threatened by what I said then that’s your prerogative to respond. But since u want to take it a step further let me enlighten u. I grasp the concept quite well thanks. Im quite familiar with mariah’s catalogue including butterfly and I agree with you yes her songs have saved lives including my mothers - hero, one sweet day, my saving grace, till the end of time, music box, never too far, just to name a few.

“BUTTERFLY” is a brilliant track but you cannot compare this greatness to “BYE BYE”. Butterfly was a completely different era. “MY PEOPLES’’ refers to anyone who has gone through any sense of physical loss, more so her fans in general but its can appeal to anyone universally – she makes it evident and loud and clear what she is referring to here – ‘THIS IS FOR MY PEOPLE WHO JUST LOST SOMEBODY’. Both Butterfly and Bye Bye focus on two different things but tread in the same territory thematically: LOVE. One deals with the pain of lost, the other deals with a love that’s not as concrete as a love between a father and a daughter.

BUTTERFLY deals with a love that is under significant pressure- a burden, it’s signifies a love that can only happen if the two people in question have similar emotions, actions and reactions to each other – in this instance one lover is holding the other down, one needs to be released to be free to rediscover themselves (now you can interprete “hurt” in any fashion – physical, mental, emotional, domestic violence, etc.), the both of them share a common knowledge that the two of them share a bond but that the only way they can truly grow is when they are apart – it’s a mutual understanding of one anothers situation – letting someone you’re in love with make her own decision is the hardest thing to do but if u – love that person enough you will let her free and release her – I let females go I knew I was in love with because Im not into pressuring them to stay with me and was brave enough to see that because a square and a circle just doesn’t fit together, there needs to be a level of compatibility, connectedness and suport. When you realize that your happiness is not dependent upon whether you are with or without someone then you can realize what true happiness is – a girl or a man should be part of your world, not its entire focus. And as time goes by and as each day you grows if the two of you should ever meet again then its meant to be - destiny, as Mariah paints this allusion very well highlighting the possibility of a rekindling –hence the butterfly metaphor - “If you should return to me/We truly were meant to be”. The audience is obviously the adult contemporary but younger lovers will identify with it and those caught up in it.

BYE BYE, on the other hand, deals with a love that is relatively familial and the pain or guilt that comes with losing someone who you wished u had more time to spend with – ‘you never got to see me back at number one…its hard to accept the fact that you’re gone forever’. Now kids who have had separated parents will understand the emotional strain attached to this. But likewise others will identify with this message too. The lyrics are simple but that’s the magic of it, its not covert or meant for interpretation. You don’t need to overcomplicate a song to bring true meaning to it. This anthem is meant to be interactive (note the last verse), believe me there won’t be no shortage of tears and candles flickering in the distance at any of her future concerts. if you gave this woman the benefit of the doubt, then you would know that this single isn’t even touching the surface of what kind of arsenal she has under her belt and in the context of her new album, e=mc2 it is far from the best track on there. But is it trash as you believe (and quick to judge), no that’s stretching it in my opinion. As I concluded earlier on, I know of many people who have had cousins, grandmothers, parents die so the timing of this single would help to address some of the pain they’re feeling even if they are not an avid Mariah fan. My aunt recently had a baby and she died because her heart stopped beating and I was wondering what if she had grown up and I had the chance to know her, it just makes u think.

ryan i feel wat ur sayin i love da old mariah tunes n butterflys a classic!.x.

but i styll love her now n viciuzurban i agree wiv wat ur sayin about byebye cos i guess da simplicity of it can help anyone relate to it both young n old

n jamaican woman i can see ur a bigger ne-yo fan dan me but i like him 2!

  17. 17 Ryan April 13, 2008 at 2:04 pm

I appreciate your response and clarification, viciuzurban. All of what you said - the understanding of both the songs, and comparing the simplicity of “Bye Bye” to the intricate web that is “Butterfly” - all of it is true. I am standing at a new vantage point now. I can appreciate “Bye Bye” for what it is…

I just think it’s better left as an album track than a single. That’s all. I just think this song is hard to market.

Guys come on. We go people complain her jumping from Touch my Body to Bye Bye, It’s the Mariah Formula.. Mid-Up Tempo then the next single is always a slow one. “One Sweet Day” We Belong Together, Butterfly, Hero, etc. Anywho I think this is a going to me moderate hit, nothing like WBT, but should play strongly for the early part of summer.

PS The Single is available for Download DAY..(sorry shameless plug)

  23. 23 Joe April 17, 2008 at 9:07 pm

LOL plz… mariah may be a great vocalist but let’s not pretend she’s some poet laureate… a butterfly metaphor? geez even my 2 year old daugher can grasp that… try some subtlety. but yeah, compared to the “bye bye” lyrics “butterfly” reads like homer’s iliad.

  24. 24 Emme April 19, 2008 at 9:08 am

She should have released Thanx 4 Nothin if that was her formula.

  25. 25 mahalia May 5, 2008 at 7:54 am

I LOVE THIS SONG!!! reminds me of my grandfather who passed away last year…i love and miss him and im sure everyone else in my family does too. :(

  26. 26 Darkshadow May 8, 2008 at 5:20 pm

I think it’s a lil early to release bye bye. I still like the song though. I think the next single that gets released should be “for the record”. It is off the chain!!! And it’s my favorite song on mimi’s new e=mc album. If mariah wants to write about songs dedicated to people she dearly loved and lost in life shall be it! Leave her alone!! Everybody grieves in their own way. So stfu!
