British Soul: Estelle- Shine Plus The Roots feat. Chrisette Michelle “Rising Up”

Estelle, the UK wonder, has a new track called “Shine” produced by Swizz Beatz. I love the energy of this track. Like “American Boy” this is another infectious track. I’m really into the whole upbeat dance trend in music right now…so this is right up my alley. I might have to check this chick’s album out. Click here to listen

The Roots tapped Chrisette Michelle and Wale for their song “Rising Up”. I’m loving this one…it’s so great to hear that live band sound and the high energy. The Roots have released more laid back production singles, so I’m digging the high energy departure from that. Chrisette’s voice perfectly matches the song. This one is a winner. What do you guys think of these tracks? Is Estelle gonna be the next UK artist to takeover in the states?

digging it (the beat mostly)<– swizz did the damn thing on that bass line, very vanity 6 influenced too)

    UHM IM LOVIN ESTELLE!

SUPRISE SUPRISE. She took a little getting use to, but damn, lovin it.

We are looking at a new era of R&B - a transformation from mostly smooth sophisticated sexy contemporary R&B that Luther started off back in the 80s to today’s flashy glamour heavy bass dance-oriented swag. Very Vanity 6.

And who began this transformation to flashy glamour heavy bass dance-oriented swag? Who you ask? The only and only… AMERIE. She may not be getting credit now, but when we revisit this time in the future, she’ll surely be remembered as one of the leaders in this new sound.

Haha… yeah, not who you expected. Amerie took that shit and made it her own with her single 1 Thing and then expanded from that. You could also say Beyonce did it big with Crazy In Love, but Amerie really became that sound rather than doing a couple songs that reflected it.

Actually Pharrell really was on the fore-front with the productions he did back in the day like with 702 on “I Still Love You.” When I heard that - that’s when I said that this was the new face of R&B, this sound…

so this is the 5th Roots song that ive heard from Rising Down… and ive gotta say, they might be the most consistantly sick group out. i doubt the radio will play this song much, but they should… oh, and p.s. i heard a better quality version of “birthday girl” and it sounds much harder than the old version that i had… shit sounded like audible bubble gum =/

Amerie? lol…Ryan I think you are really stretching it with that one.

well, i just got finished listening to Estelle’s new album “SHINE”— and surprisingly im not that impressed… at all, its funny cuz ive been really anticipating her album. with appearances by cee-lo, john legend, wyclef, kardinal offishall, kanye. and production by mark ronson, will.i.am, wyclef, swizz beats, jerry wonda. it still didnt manage to pop for me

maybe i just gotta let it grow on me, but it didnt really jump at me at me as ultra-stellar. (i did just wake up and im only on my second listen)

being a dual artist (singer/emcee) it gives for a lil more (cant find the word). but the fact of the matter is she is just OK at both, not really a beast at neither. her singing kinda reminds me of lilly allen and her raps can be a bit predictable at time, a lil ABC-ish.

all those Lauryn comparisons will be promptly thrown out the window (not that i had those preconcieved notions… but those who did). not to say i didnt enjoy some tracks and certain moments on the album… but i dont know, i guess i was just expecting a bit more

hopefully i’ll have a change of heart after a few more listens

i was impressed with her album. i’m more upset that “American Boy” is a Will I Am song, but the album was fire. Had alot of Lauryn Hill influence…

Her album has good production…but she is very average. Average at both singing and emceeing (as previously stated). I have seen her live and she is terrible, could hardly hear her and her vocals were a mess. If you like solid production but are not too bothered about average vocals than the album is up your street. Shine is probably one of the stronger songs on the album….production wise.

If Shine is the strongest song on the album then Estelle is officially wack.

Dang, I had hopes till I read yalls comments. LOL.

I’ll probably still get a discounted copy of the album just to judge it myself and do a review.

New sound of R & B? Luther is turning over in his grave at that comment. I hope the hell not! LOL.

Maybe we need a new category for these folks, Pop & B, Rhythm & Pop, or even Booty Bass & Pop. BUT NEVER R&B!!!

**starts to cry and puts on some Dru Hill**

As far as I am concerned R&B died years ago and only lives in the underground. All this is just Pop or Hip Pop…but it ain’t R&B. How can a song be called R&B without any rhythm or blues involved???

WALE! no one even mentioned him, but he is the Black Thought of the future…forget the kanye comparisons because Wale probably will never see the exposure that ‘ye gets, but he is the truth…mufucka can straight mc!
