HM Video: Raheem DeVaughn - Woman

1.  This post is dedicated to my mother.  A couple of months ago, she heard this song on the Michael Baisden show and she’s been asking me about it.  She assumed that her son - who runs a blog about music and black culture with his good friend, Reecie - would know about this song.  I heard nothing about this song.  Moms sent me text messages, voice messages, and constant reminders about Raheem’s new song.  I asked her “Mommy (yes, I still call my moms “Mommy”) - what does he say?”  She replies….”He just says ‘Woman Woman Woman Woman Woman.”  I am thinking….”Thanks. That helps.” So - here you go, Mommy.  Raheem Devaughn’s “Woman.”  I hope you enjoy. You can also download it by clicking here and put it on your new mp3 player you just got for your birthday.  2.  This song is amazing.  I’ve been blessed to be surrounding by so many amazing women that I am glad that Raheem made this joint.  Please turn up your speakers and enjoy. What do you think about this song and video?  Does this remind you of Angie Stone’s “Brotha”?  Are you anticipating Raheem’s upcoming album?  Let me know what you think!

New Music: Alicia Keys- Hurts So Bad, Mary J. Blige - Work That Remix feat. Busta Rhymes, Trina- I Got A Bottle feat. Missy Elliott

A bonus track from Alicia Keys’ new album called “Hurts So Bad” has surfaced. I’m actually really digging this. I love the Doo Wop production and she brings a great soulfulness to the track as usual. This a hot one! Oh yeah and kudos to AK for selling over 700K albums in her debut week. Click here to listen

Mary J. Blige has a new track called “Work That” and I have the remix featuring Busta Rhymes. I’m loving the lyrics to this song and the production is hot. I like this song much more than “Just Fine”. Mary always comes with the ladies anthems, and I can see this being another one of those tracks you put on when you need a little inspiration. Even Busta came through with a hot and lyrically relevant verse…nice! Click here to listen

Trina has a new song featuring Missy Elliott called “I Got A Bottle”. *Sighs*. I feel like a broken record every time I review one of Trina’s songs. At least I can give her credit for doing something left field and unique…it’s just too bad that it’s wack and just weird. I don’t know what else to say about this one. Click here to listen
What do you think of these new tracks? Should “Hurts So Bad” have been included on the album? Is “Work That” a stronger single than “Just Fine”?

Just Wrong: Ludacris- “Ludachristmas”

I know I’m hella corny for this, but Christmas music is my favorite music in the world lol. Usually I’m pretty much down for anything Christmas oriented, so I approached Ludacris’ song “Ludacrhristmas” from the “Fred Clause” soundtrack with an open-mind. But….the song is terrible! Aside from the few token Christmas words thrown in there, this really isn’t any different than any other rap song talking about expensive things and general mischief. This was just bad…what a waste!

What do you think about Luda’s Christmas song? With his talent, isn’t this song a disappointment in the creativity department?

New Videos: Birdman (aka Baby) 100 Million, Chris Brown- With You

Some folks love finding new ways to be ignorant….damn shame. Anyway…Birdman has a new video for his song “100 Million” featuring Rick Ross, Dre, DJ Khaled, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne. All of these songs are starting to sound the same…and will someone please answer me…why is Birdman still rapping?

Chris Brown is clearly trying be #1 on TRL with his new video for “With You”. I like how the video is somewhat artistic, but it’s hard for me to give him too much credit when the concept is practically the same as his video for “This Christmas” minus the magical powers lol. Still…the walking down the street dancing and singing is something we’ve already seen from him just last week. Maybe I’m just being picky…at any rate the song is really sweet and nice departure for him his more player lyrics the first two singles. I can see this being a hit for him.

What do you think about these new videos? Who is the most annoying hype man on a track…DJ Khaled, Diddy, Funkmaster Flex, or DJ Clue? Do you think Chris Brown’s ballad will appeal to a lot of people?

New Videos: Chingy & Amerie- “Fly Like Me” Plus 3 New Videos from Freeway

Chingy and Amerie have a new video for their song “Fly Like Me” and like I said when I first posted it a while back…it’s a banger! I’m glad Amerie is still getting a chance to shine despite the fact that her unreleased in the US album was total trash! The video doesn’t have much to it other than “looking fly” in an exotic location, but I can definitely see a lot of people liking this.

Freeway has three new videos that I’m sure he shot in the same day and in the same outfit lol. I’m not even going to waste my time watching the videos to review it…so click at your own risk.

Click here to watch Freeway- “Still Got Love”
Click here to watch Freeway- “Lights Get Low” featuring Rick Ross
Click here to watch Freeway- “It’s Over”

What do you think of these new videos? Are Chingy and Amerie bringing the heat with their new song? Did Freeway make any videos worth watching?

Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down: Sugarland and Beyonce’s Country Mix of “Irreplaceable” & Alicia Keys’ Reggae Version of “No One”

Whoever thought it was a good idea to mash up Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” with a country twang was so wrong lol. Although I will admit that the song has a smidge of country in it, it doesn’t have enough to make this rendition half way decent. Plus, the chick from Sugarland just can’t sing. I give this a thumbs down…waaaay down.

Alicia Keys took the polar opposite route and did a reggae twist on her single “No One”. I actually really like what she did with the song. It was hot seeing all these reggae artists that would probably never get the chance to perform on the AMAs get their shine. Not to mention the flip was totally banging. Too bad the crowd wasn’t ready it…but I enjoyed it. Upgrade!

What do you guys think? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

PS- I know I’m a day late, but I’ve been beyond swamped…I’m gonna get back on my A-game though!

iPod Commercial featuring Mary J. Blige

Source:  MacRumors

Apple debuted a new iPod + iTunes ad tonight on television. The ad continues the silhouette dancer theme of Apple’s long running iPod ads. The ad is featured on Apple’s iTunes product page. (direct QuickTime link)

The television ad promotes a new album called Growing Pains by Mary J Blige. Growing Pains is available for pre-order on iTunes ahead of its December 18th released date. The individual song, Work That, is also available now as a single.

Apple’s use of songs in their television advertisements has clearly shown to be a boost for artists. Lesser known artist, Feist, recently saw significant exposure after 1234 was used in the newest iPod nano tv ad.

While “Work That” is gaining momentum on the charts and radio play, Mary J. Blige is doing her thang!!  I think she is the first major R&B artist to use Apple/iTunes/iPod to promote her album.  It’s great to see R&B and hip-hop being promoted with mainstream products as long as it’s a balanced.  I do not want to see NASCAR like endorsements with the artists, but  using Target, Wal-Mart, Apple, Budweiser, etc. continues to show the social responsibility and influence our music has over culture.

Somebody needs to get promoted for that idea.   I can’t wait to hear the new album and I hope Santa blesses me with a new iMac.

What do you think of the ad?  Is there still a fine line between being authentic (esp. in the world of hip-hop and R&B) and using endorsements to sell your products?  Or the likes of Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Mary J Blige, Dr. Dre, etc. still considered “sell-outs” by merging 2 products to drive record sales? OR is it simply genius marketing?  Does it not matter any more?  Please share your thoughts…

Kanye West Makes a Triumphant and Heart Wrenching Return to the Stage in Paris

This weekend, Kanye West returned to the public eye with his concert in Paris, France for his Graduation tour. It’s no surprise that Kanye would use the stage as an outlet for the overwhelming grief he must be feeling, considering that his mother was often by his side when he performed and wholeheartedly supported and believed in his music. The thing that is amazing about this concert is that Kanye isn’t putting on a tough guy facade…he is the same energetic and vulnerable artist he has always been. I don’t know how anyone can watch him soldier through his performances and not feel empathetic to his pain and a great deal of respect for what it must take to get on that stage after burying his mother just a few days earlier.

My respect and admiration for Kanye has been criticized on this site quite a bit, but it’s times like this that prove unequivocally that those feelings are well warranted. Although the footage captured from concert is very amateur, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to be able to sense the kind of energy in the air. I’m sure Kanye is gaining strength by the abundant love and support from his fans, and I hope that he continues to get the love and support he needs. Check out his performances.

New Videos: Talib Kweli, DJ Khaled+ Plus Hella Folks, Consequence, , Lyfe Jennings

A slew of new videos have come out this week…so I’m playing catch up in this post.

Talib Kweli has a new vid for his song “Everything Man”. Hmm…I guess he is just trying put ANYthing out there just to keep some buzz going about his new album. He clearly had no budget for this video at all. I want to give him some credit for grassroots and artistic..but I just can’t even kid myself.

When The Game first came out with the mega “One Blood Remix” with like 15 people, it was a really dope concept…but now the novelty of 15 folks on one track has worn off.  Anyway the video for DJ Khaled’s video “I’m So Hood Remix” featuring Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, Baby, and Rick Ross hit the net. A bunch of other random folks made a cameo in the video as well. The song is kind of a banger since everyone came on the track with intensity and a lot of energy. But I have to ask again, why is Baby still rapping? Oh yeah and will someone please tell DJ Khaled to STFU? All that yelling, “we the best, WHO? Weeeee” is so annoying and he sounds like an idiot.
