New Hip Hop Music: Lil Wayne, David Banner, Too Short/E-40, Ghostface Killah/Method Man/Raekwon

Lil Wayne has new banger called “Brand New”. The production is so hot…it’s kinda sounds like a throwback west coast hip hop track (like Eazy E Boyz In the Hood). His flow is hot and the lyrics are hilarious. Click here to listen. Oh yeah and while we are on the subject of Weezy…I heard on Power106 this morning that he is rumored to be engaged to actress Lauren London. They were spotted at a New Orleans bball game before Thanksgiving and they have supposedly been on and off again for several years. I don’t really take engagements from Lil Wayne too seriously, since he’s been engaged several times yet never made it to the altar.

David Banner has a new track called “I Want You”. The song is one big metaphor for his love of Hip Hop. He went in a totally opposite direction from Common’s much more reflective and clever classic “I Used To Love H.E.R.” and I’m just not feeling it. Sampling Prince’s “Beautiful One’s” could have been a slam dunk, but he just went overboard with the production and his flow. Some folks will probably like it simply because of the Prince sample, but I doubt that this will appeal to very many people. Click here to listen

Too Short is coming out with another album and he has a new song with E-40 called “This My One”. Now, this song is something that only west coast folks will understand…that Hyphy music. Since I’m from Cali and we get hyphy out here, I gotta love this. This will definitely be a club banger. Too-Short is too damn old to be rapping still (and still rapping about the same sh!t he was talking about 20 years ago lol), but I’ll give him a pass since this song is hot. Click here to listen

Ghostface Killah has a new track called “Yolanda’s House” featuring Method Man and Raekwon. The song is cool, but the singing in the background is overkill at times. The storytelling switch off between the rappers is hot and it keeps the listener engaged in the lyrics. Not too many people can vibe the way these guys do and pull of a song with such fluidity so this is definitely a winner and in a league of its own. Click here to listen

What do you guys think of these new tracks? Does Lil Wayne ever leave the recording studio? Did David Banner do the Prince sample any justice? What do you think of his spin on the love for Hip Hop metaphor? Do folks get hyphy in your city? Are you feeling the Ghostface, Meth, and Rae collab?

Like Weezy said at the recent Jigga concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom… Jay-Z is the “best rapper alive” but Wayne is “next in line”.

When I think of the best rappers alive Lil Wayne doesn’t even make the top ten.

    Best Rappers today List

    1. Jay Z
    2. Kanye West
    3. Andre 3000
    4. Talib Kweli
    5. Common
    6. Scarface
    7. Lupe Fiasco
    8. Black though
    9. Eminem - Despite the fact that his last album was a step down he is still a great rapper.
    10. TI

I have nothing against Lil Wayne but he isn’t the deep rapper people make him out to be and he doesn’t compare with the artists on the list. He does have a good buzz on him. I think Jay Z said it best on Ignorant shit “I make Big Pimpin, Give It to Me or one of those and you hail me as one of the greatest writer of the century but I come out with some though provoking shit and you question rather I’m falling off”.

David Banner is acting a fool on this song. He had something on his mind to make it, I can tell. I guess I like, I ain’t really sure yet. A person gotta listen to his shit a little hard sometimes to hear what all he is really saying. He’s no lyrical Faulkner but he’s close at the SIPP is going to get right now.

I like it when he talking dirty, too. The ending is a little on the wild side, but tolerable.

    Hey Guy’s!
I think LIL WAYNE is the best rapper ever now and all his songs really Rock and look at all his Lyrics I mean is all in line and he’s a Lyrics doctor. Jay-Z used to be the best rapper ever.I think Jay-Z is an old man now I mean 40yrs is a big age and he really needs to get off the game and open a rap school so that he can get more young guys into the game and he still has his respect.
