Let’s Make a List: The Top R&B/Hip Hop Summer Songs

Since the summer is here and it’s time to bust out all the best seasonal songs that only sound right when the sun is shining and people are walking around in bikinis, shorts, and flip flops…I wanted to compile a list of the best summer themed songs. Here are some of my top favs:

Hands down the undisputed top Summer song of all time is “Summertime” By Will Smith aka Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff

“I Get Around” by Tupac: To this day this song still bangs and it just doesn’t get much more Cali than this! Watch

“Summertime in the LBC” by Dove Shack: If you’re not from LA you probably haven’t heard this song, but this is one of my favorites since it has this cool laid back feel that reminds of the days when me and my friends would wear matching outfits to the Crenshaw Mall to take pictures at the one hour photo lol. Watch

“My Boo” by Ghost Town DJs. I know that this one is super old, but the pool party video was classic! Watch

“Feel Me Flow” by Naughty By Nature: Don’t front, Naughty By Nature used to be the hotness back in the day with O.P.P. and Hip Hop Hooray…but Feel Me Flow was their ultimate summer jam.

“Rock the Boat” by Aaliyah: Most of us will never forget when we heard about Aaliyah’s untimely death…which in turned immortalized Rock the Boat, one of her hottest songs ever. I know it’s kind of cheating by choosing this song…but since I played that song out Summer of 2001…it goes on my list. Watch

“Rumpshaker” by Wreckx N Effect: All I gotta say is “All I wanna do is ama zoom zoom zoom and a boom boom” lol. Watch

I know all these songs are old as hell…but I couldn’t think of any new ones that stood out. So that’s where you guys come in…what songs should be added to the list? I didn’t find one site online that counts down the top summer R&B and Hip Hop jams…so let’s be the first to do it.

I’d take “Rock the Boat” off. It’s not as fun as all the other songs.

A lot of folks may laugh at this one, but MC Hammer “Pumps and the Bumps” was the jam. It has a real summer feel to it, pretty close to the feel of “Rump Shaker.”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxp6W12QQbE

Back in 1995, Montell Jordan’s “This is How we Do It” was the joint too. I’d say it had a nice summer feel to it too.

Janet Jackson’s “That’s the Way Love Goes” - My mom had that on tape back in the day.

Juvenile’s “Back That Ass Up” - I’m from Louisiana, and that literally shut that summer down.

  3. 3 redshade07 July 17, 2007 at 2:40 pm

Summertime, hell, everybody listens to that STILL.

I think this summer, Umbrella has made itself a classic…

Then, PIMP by 50 was hot a few ago

Eminem was always shuttin’ it down over here in NJ…especially when Without Me dropped.

And, of course, a lot of Jay Z. He sounds good no matter what time of year, but especially summer. Particularly La La La, that’s still getting played on radio here.

  4. 4 drizz July 17, 2007 at 3:18 pm

    Summer Nights by Lil Rob.

  5. 5 reen July 17, 2007 at 3:48 pm

    Shorty Swing My Way, LOL.

  6. 6 aceman July 17, 2007 at 3:57 pm

DJ JJ & FP’s Summertime is a classic favourite, I’ve been listening to the Homebase album lately, but I can’t seem to find the Code Red album, I probably have it backed up on a cassette somewhere. :?

Some Black Eyed Peas is what I like to have playing while in the sun…

  7. 7 thehaytidream July 17, 2007 at 4:15 pm

I’d agree with #1. Aaliyah is good anytime of the year… and that song is SAD knowing what happened shortly after the making of it.

How can you forget It Was A Good Day by Ice Cube?!?!?
    Woah Now by B Rich
Big Pimpin by Jay-Z ft. UGK
California Love by Tupac ft. Dr. Dre
    C.R.E.A.M. by Wu Tang Clan
No Letting Go by Wayne Wonder
    Shake Ya Ass by Mystikal
Doin It by LL Cool J
What Mean The World To You by Cam’ron ft. Trina
    What’s Your Fantasy? by Ludacris
Damn! by Youngbloodz ft. Lil Jon

I could go on for days… I ain’t even put in a single Three 6 Mafia, Outkast, or Cash Money track.

  8. 8 Reecie July 17, 2007 at 4:17 pm

I agree with what most of you guys said…except of course taking Aaliyah off the list…she deserves to have at least one song! There are so many more song that could be added…so keep them coming.

  9. 9 Ave. July 17, 2007 at 4:37 pm

“Try Again” by Aaliyah was a summer jam.

People are saying “Umbrella” is a summer jam. I think it’s a summer jam by default. There’s just nothing else really out there. Summer jams should make you stop what you’re doing, “Umbrella” never did that for me.

Usher has quite a few also.

I remember back in the day on a ride home from Atlanta one summer, “That’s Just My Baby Daddy” was the song. Who is it by? I have no idea.

  12. 12 Stallion July 17, 2007 at 7:07 pm

    Sisqo - Thong Song.
    R.Kelly - Ignition.
    Beyonce - Crazy in love.
    Justin Timberlake - Summer love.
Usher - Yeah. I’m not sure if this song was a summer hit.

  13. 13 Ave. July 17, 2007 at 7:29 pm

    “Summer Love?” lol

“Yeah!” was in the spring, but “Burn” and “Confessions” were that summer.

I can’t believe nobody has said “Lean Back” by the Terror Squad.

  14. 14 ddot July 17, 2007 at 8:05 pm

    Nelly - Hot in Herre
puff ft. mase and biggie - More money More problems ( i remember watching the video 1000 times in the summer)

I am having to many nostalgia moments …i need to stop reading the comments.

All time best to me is Summer time - Fresh prince (or was he Will by then)

  15. 15 sofia July 18, 2007 at 12:23 am

Jodeci - Get On Up … ultimate summer jam!
Mariah f. ODB - Fantasy remix
Foxy Brown f. Blackstreet - Gotta get you home tonight
Da Brat f. Biggie - Da B Sides

  16. 16 socialorb July 18, 2007 at 1:13 am

Wow, what a list. I am sure a bunch is missing from here.

I’m from NYC and one song nobody seems to remember that was played constantly all summer was the remix to “They Want Efx” and “Backenefx” from Das Efx.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF1sSCBzFfY

Maybe it was an East Coast thing or even a NY thing but mad people “stopped” what they was doing to nod their heads to those songs.

  17. 17 socialorb July 18, 2007 at 1:47 am

    Oh and another dum diggity:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycfSnggSQGw

Don’t forget TLC and Creep. Mad remixes for that song. The one played most was the Untouchables ReMix

  18. 18 thehaytidream July 18, 2007 at 4:47 am

I gotta hit you with DC’s banga last summer:

Dig Dug Shake It by Wale

  19. 19 redshade07 July 18, 2007 at 4:51 am

No Diggity was pretty popular here too now that i think bout it…

  20. 20 king of the midwest July 18, 2007 at 7:07 am

a couple of summers ago, you couldnt drive down a stl street without hearing the young jeezy “TRAP OR DIE” mixtape…he didnt even have an album out, but when he came to the city…whatever club he came to, that block was shut down, and mufks was paying like a $100 to get in.

  21. 21 king of the midwest July 18, 2007 at 7:10 am

oh yeah, tht same summer “the carter” came out…and everybody was bumping “go dj”

shyt wayne had this summer as well with “stuntin like my daddy”

  22. 22 theQB July 18, 2007 at 7:41 am

I definitely agree with #15 Sophia. “Get on up” by Jodeci is a very summer season song.

  23. 23 thehaytidream July 18, 2007 at 8:02 am

Will Smith owned the summers in the 90’s… with movies like Independence Day, Men In Black I and II and Wild Wild West… and the singles that came with the movies.

Gettin Jiggy Wit It - Will Smith
Wild Wild West - Will Smith

  24. 24 collegechick205 July 18, 2007 at 8:26 am

When Sean Paul first came out….Gimme the Light…everybody was trying to do them dances in the videos lol

  25. 25 The-XFacta July 18, 2007 at 8:59 am

I love this post, all great songs except for the Ghosttown DJ’s…

  26. 26 socialorb July 18, 2007 at 6:43 pm

LOL @ The-XFacta for Ghosttown comment

Well, I still like the song they made but I’ll admit it wasn’t for everybody.

  27. 27 redshade07 July 20, 2007 at 1:51 pm

    Sean Paul is always popular.

Random by Lady Sovereign was pretty cool last year.

Also, Galang by MIA was popular at dances and sh!t [too young for clubs].

  28. 28 thehaytidream July 20, 2007 at 2:49 pm
