Eurweb has the story:
Tony Thompson, a member of the 1990s R&B group Hi Five, was found dead Friday night of an apparent drug overdose, friends told the Waco Tribune-Herald. He was 31.
Thompson’s body was discovered at around 10 p.m. outside of an apartment complex in his native Waco, Texas.
Immediately following the signing of Hi Five to Jive Records in 1990, the group found success with their multi-platinum self-titled debut album, which featured the hit singles “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game),” “I Can’t Wait Another Minute,” and “Just Another Girlfriend.”Two years later, the group scored with hits “She’s Playing Hard to Get” and “Quality Time.”
Thompson, who grew up in Oklahoma City, released a solo album, “Sexsational,” in 1995 following the breakup of Hi Five during the previous year. He reformed the band with four new members – including his little brother – in 2006 and released their album “The Return” on his own record label, N’Depth.
The singer had recently moved back to Waco from Dallas and was working on new material at the time of his death.Speaking of Thompson’s new material, if you go to his MySpace page (www.myspace.com/tonythompsonmusicpage) you can hear what he was working. One song that stands out is the incredibly groovealicious “Come Over.”

I can’t front I used to like Hi-5.. Got one of my first grinds off of them!!
The-XFacta
Hi-Five, much respect goes out to them. “Never Should’ve Let You Go” by said group is one of my all time favs.
I loved the group Hi-5. I still remember seeing him at McDonalds in 1991. I was so excited my friend and I nearly tackled him. He was a great singer. God rest his soul and bless his family
This is a great loss, and I would like to send out my condolences to his family and friends, he will be missed
OMG!!! How time flies!
I remember 1993 like a mug!! “Kissing Game ” was my all time favorite song that summer of my eigth grade year. That’s the song I dedicated on the radio to my FIRST shawty ( Cloteal Johnston ).
I always thought Tony was heir to the R&B throne after, Bobby Brown. The record companies really didnt know how to market him . “Sexsational” was a very well put together project that fell wayside to Mr Tevin Campbell , who was often compared to Tony ( who i thought had better tone and pitch than Tevin; is nt it wierd that Tevin is his son’s name??!!!)
I would have loved to hear what he had up his musical sleeve as a comeback. And by the way ” Come Over” IS NOT a song he was working on: its featured on his solo CD.
Guess I’ll never get to hear my dream duet : Tony Thompson feat. Faith Evans . That would have been HOT!
God Bless to Tony and his family.
ps- Tony shout out in Heaven to my friend , Chris Bender.
I really thought he was so handsome, and his voice made him that much more appealing. I’m sorry I never got the opportunity to meet with him. I can say one thing though I’m sorry about his lost and my condolences goes out to his family, closest friends, and kids if any.
I just wanted to say that the song “Come Over” was actually a song off of his solo album “Sexsational” and not a new song that he was working on. It just goes to show how slept on he truly was. All of his songs and vocals could have easily blown away Usher, Chris Brown, etc…. As a true fan since the beginning, I know just how beautiful his voice was and I could never understand why he didn’t gain the fame that I thought he deserved. R.I.P. I truly loved you and your music and you will be missed.
I can remember Hi-five being one of the most played and beloved R&B groups during the early 90’s. They were a group that could really blow vocally and who had really touching and clean lyrics that my mother even approved of! Rather Mr Tony Thompson knew it or not he made his mark in the history of R&B music by being the lead singer of a group that made timeless music that still sounds just as refreshing as it did when i first heard it playing on the radio 16 years ago. He will be deeply missed; This is a great lost to the R&B world and it has brought a great sadness to my heart to learn of his sudden passing. May god bless his family and freinds and Tony although i didn’t hear from you musically in years i still and will always love and remember “The Kissing Game”
i truly agree with the person that said tony’s music was slept on. he had great talent and unlike most artist out today, he had a cd that u could just listen to the whole cd without skipping songs. indeed he will be truly missed but lets thank God that he left a great legacy down here with us. i listen to sexational everyday. i miss him dearly….
