R. Kelly starts off his new album with “The Champ” and it is clear that he has a lot of anger and aggression he is trying to get off his chest. He has been through a lot of drama and fallen in and out of grace over the past few years…but he seems to fail to realize that he brought all of it on himself. For someone to be on trial for child molestation charges…he should be more grateful that he is still getting to do what he wants to do and make tons of money at it; and have less contempt. At any rate…unless you’re in the mood for hearing Kells act like he’s a victim then skip it.
Next up is the song “Double Up” featuring Snoop Dogg. This is essentially the average rap song but with singing. Isn’t Kells 40 years old? Why is he still talking about picking up women and being out at the club? Grow up man! Snoop adds a verse to the song and I can’t deny that the two have good chemistry…but he isn’t talking about jack either. The singing is very lazy, the production is ok; overall this song is maybe a 5/10.
On “Trying to Get a Number” R. Kelly collaborates with Nelly and manages to make an incredibly corny song. All I’m going to say about this…are they really serious? No seriously…seriously?
“Get Dirty” featuring Chamillionaire is along the same lines of the other songs…clubs, women, drinking, spending money, yadda, yadda, yadda. The production is blazin and it’s not often that we hear a dirty south sound from R. Kelly. I could see this being a real club banger.
R. Kelly channels T-Pain with some computerized vocals on “Leave Your Name”. The song is basically about his answering machine message where he says he will get back to you if he isn’t having sex, smoking weed, not faded, or making a baby. A new low in lyrical content Kells…way to go.
I really like the production and the singing on “Freaky in the Club”…but you know what? This would’ve been a great stepping song if he would’ve put an ounce of effort into making the song have an ounce of substance. Nonetheless, this is a really catchy song and isn’t as bad lyrically as the other songs. I actually like this one…it’s sad to say this on a song called “Freaky in the Club”…but does this mean there is hope for the album after all?
“The Zoo” proves that R. Kelly still has some creativity left. I’m on the fence about whether this song is totally ridiculous or pretty good. I like the production and his singing is cool…but making animal sounds and including sounds of elephants and birds is just f*&kin bizarre! lol.
We all know and love “I’m a Flirt” so…moving right along.
Up next is “Same Girl” with Usher…which gets back to the root of R. Kelly’s strong suit: telling interesting stories. On the song R. Kelly and Usher discover that they are both seeing the same woman. I like the back and forth of the song, the production is good, and they both sound great.
“Real Talk” shows that R. Kelly is a man that just looooves drama. In the song, R. Kelly is going off to his lady defending himself from allegations of cheating. If you ask me…he sounds like he is guilty but just making every excuse under the sun to cover up his actions. The problem with Kells is…he spends half the album talking about how he’s a flirt, player, partier, etc…and then turns around and does a song like this and expects the listener to be sympathetic. The f*&k outta here! Anyways…he sounds really trifling on the song with how he’s cussing the woman out, calling her out of her name…just ridiculous. All I can say is, “I wish a *&^(%$@ would!” lol.
On “Hook It Up”…R. Kelly talks about telling his homie’s girlfriend to hook him up with someone like her. The speaking intro of the song starts off a little suspect, but the song turns it around and comes off on a mildly positive tip. Huey guest stars on the song and he actually contributes a nice verse…I’m shocked! I think this is a song that a lot of people will like.
“Rock Star” features a blazin hot verse from Ludacris and guest appearance from Kid Rock. But damn…how many songs does Kells really need about smoking, drinking, and hooking up? Sh!t is getting beyond monotonous at this point. With that said…the rock vibe of the song is hot!
“Best Friend” features Polow da Don (who should never rap again) and Keyshia Cole. This song is a complete disgrace to R&B music! First of all…R. Kelly really shouldn’t have a song about a man talking to his girl and best friend from jail when he’s on trial for serious charges. Secondly…why in the hell would someone seriously want to sit around and listen to this kind of garbage? Has music deteriorated to the point to where we’re expected to be interested in the fact that the jail-bird’s toilet paper is “cutting his ass”? I mean seriously…earlier when I said “Leave Your Name” was a new low in lyrical content for Kells…I spoke too soon…THIS is officially a new low.
I’m soooo sick of this album at this point, so I almost threw up a little when “Rollin” came on…because I just don’t know if I can take any more of this b.s. he is trying to pass off as R&B. This song is overkill since he already covered this same lyrical content in the intro of the album. The beat is hot…but this song is so unnecessary.
R. Kelly dedicates “Sweet Tooth” to every kind of woman there is. This song is borderline (and by borderline I’m being generous) perverted.
On “Having a Baby”, R. Kelly finds out that he is having a baby. This song sounds very amateurish and Kells sounds like he is struggling to sing. I’m not really feeling this…Jamie Foxx’s “You Still Got It” is a far superior “baby” song.
On “Sex Planet” R. Kelly gets astronomical lol. I like the groove of the song, and I’ll give R. Kelly a cool point for creativity…but the song gets a little weird in parts. I couldn’t really see myself listening to this song with a straight face…or anybody listening to this song to put them in the mood.
“Rise Up” a song dedicated to Virginia Tech ( I don’t remember R. Kelly doing a Hurricane Katrina song) closes the album. This song sounds incredibly out of place on an album that is primarily about sex, drugs, and partying…but I guess I can’t knock him for displaying some decency and substance. With that said…this is a greatly inspirational song.
Overall…this album is pure trash. R. Kelly is a 40 year old married (albeit separated) man with kids…so he has absolutely no business singing about these immature topics. For this to be his 13th LP…this should be musically genius. Instead…he took the easy way out and reduced himself to singing ridiculous songs that you would expect from rappers like Snoop Dogg. I’m officially revoking R. Kelly’s “King of R&B” crown until he comes out with some real R&B music. DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM…I assure it is as terrible as I’ve described.
Have you heard “Double Up”? What do you think about the album? Shouldn’t a man of his age and his musical legacy be producing classics at this point in his career? Why don’t people want to grow up in their music anymore?

RockStar is the only track that caught my attention. Banger.

yooooo REECIE…YOU MIRKED KELLS. lmao…… “DO Not BUY THIS ALBUM” lmao…..
high-larious
I’m not sure why I gave this album a chance after your review (hilarious btw) didn’t sound like you were giving it 5 stars. I wholeheartedly agree with you about this album…It’s garbage. I will personally karate kick the King of R&B crown of his head in an effort to knock some sense into him. I can’t even say that this album is half-way decent b/c it’s definitely not. I like the beats on the some of the songs but then Kellz ruins it by failing to deliver lyrically and vocally. I really like Hook It Up. Its one of the three songs (Rock Star and I’m a Flirt are the other two) that I can actually get down with on this album. Huey’s verse is good and I was somewhat surprised. Rock Star has a crazy beat and I love Luda’s verse on it.
Baiscally, someone should have told R. Kelly to scrap this and come out with something worthwhile. I would not buy this album either.
I completely agree. The album lacks any good lyrical content, and Kells just sounds lazy similar to Snoop’s latest album. Both of the two should be getting better musically, yet both for both of them I feel their first albums were their best. Doggystyle is really the only Snoop I can listen to (other than Drop It Like It’s Hot… lol). Kells really needs to grow up– but the sad thing is that I’m afraid this album is gonna sell. What has hip hop come to when this album as poor lyrically and subject-wise as this is a contender for the top of the charts? Damn… the only good part of the album is the guest appearances. Yet the stand-out ones in my case are limited to Luda and Huey.
Oh and on a different note– I don’t exactly agree with your note on Polow Da Don. Dude can be a little corny as I feel he was on “Throw Some D’s”, but listen to Rich Boy’s new song “Good Things” w/ Polow and tell me if you still feel the same way.
Reecie what was your opinion on R.Kelly last album? The funny thing about this album is I heard R.Kelly say this is the best album he have ever made.
R.kelly i was listen to all your song and i agree u are the king of R&B
One of the key reasons R. Kelly has stayed so relevant for so long is that he’s been able to adapt with the times and the “Hollyhood” style (as he refers to it) that he’s kickin’ on this one is what’s poppin’ right now. People scream for the artist to grow up and blaze new trails but when they do…it goes over there heads (ala Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come). Besides, fans don’t like to grow with the artists anymore so if he woulda dropped the “Makin’ Babies” album with all ballads…it would’ve hit like a pebble in the ocean…no waves. (see the “Happy People/You Saved Me” album which I thought was good).
With all that said…I actually like the record. I went to this club in DC Sunday and they ran 3 joints off the album in the primetime hour so he’s gonna kill em in the club this summer. As utterly ridiculous as songs like “Real Talk”, “Best Friend”, & “The Zoo” sound, they’re actually really creative concepts once you get used to them. Kells wins b/c he’s a monster with the melodies & hooks. Love him or hate him, the Pied Piper has proven to be just that.
I must say that I agree 100%. I actually couldn’t stomach listening to the whole album. I mean, that song where he’s cussing out his girlfriend has to be the lamest sh*t I have ever heard. Kells has definitely F*cked up on this one. I for one WILL NOT be buying this album. It is a waste of money to me. THe R in R&B my a$$.
Wow after 16 years is the “R” (pronounced -Rrrraahhh) falling off?? It appears to be so..Damn now I gotta listen to Neo-Yo and Chris Brown.. Oh hell no!
http://thexfacta.wordpress.com
Is it bad that I like Rihanna’s cd better than the Kellz…ahh what does it matter…oh yea, Luvanmusiq, Sex Love & Pain, Street Love, Aint Nothin Like Me, and even Special Occasion>>>>> Double Up
Album is f**king awful….could barely stomache to hear it all. Beats are overrated…if you have no melody, catchy hook or decent lyrics you are not impressing me. Its sad that people will buy any crap just for some decent beats.
Reecie I respect your Polow comment after hearing the track. His rhymes are horrible. Yet I still can’t deny his verse on Rich Boy’s “Good Things”.
Lol, I said last week, that Kells is the “king of the remixes”, but only his true fans will appreciate the CD. And that’s before I even listened to it. His remixes and provocative videos will push this record to atleast platinum status.
About Polow Da Don…to me a good rapper is a good rapper regardless of what beat you put him on, what artist he is collaborating with, etc. Nas, Jay Z, Ludacris, Jadakiss, etc…those are good rappers, because they know how to bring the heat consistently (even though I’m not a fan of the Lox I like Jada’s collabs).
I shouldn’t have to hear A as in one, two, or even three songs to know that someone is a good rapper…I should be able to hear ANY song and realize that.
About “only his true fans will appreciate the cd”…I don’t agree with that one. I’ve been riding with R. Kelly since his Public Announcement days and I’ve enjoyed a good 95% of his stuff to date…but this album is not consistent with how R. Kelly has presented himself over the past decade and a half. So was aaaaaall of that a big fat facade? I don’t think so…the times have changed and unfortunately, this is kind of content is what’s moving records. Maybe he is having a mid life crisis or something…but this is a disgrace to his music catalog. I don’t doubt that this album will be popular, hell even Jeezy outsold Nas off the strength of peddling ignorant a$$ raps…but that is more of a reflection about how low the musical standards are today.
damn ya cats is killing him on the reviews lol.. I actually like the album…granted he should have put some of the bonus tracks in and left out the track with nelly and maybe even rollin… but overall I thought it was tight
I may be the only one but i like this album. The zoo,Like a flirt remix,Real Talk,Same Girl,And espcially rock star(God damn thats a hot track) Are all bangers. Only thing im mad at kells for is making me wait til july 24th for some new trapped. He could of at least put chapter 13 on here.
I actually like his album. Rock Star has to be my fav. Hoot It Up, Same Girl, Double Up, Get Dirty…i think they are all good. Yeah he is 40 and still coming up with youngster tracks….BUT its raking in the money so why would he want to stop…??? Anyways, i like it and im happy with my purchase
Peace out
You all are haters!!! R Kelly was, still is and will always be the KING of R&B…13 albums??? Who can beat that??? He is a creative genius…Who has more collabo’s out right now? So as the remix goes, “This is why he’s Kell’s, This is why he’s Kells, this is why, this is why, this why he’s Kells…He’s hot cause yall not…Holla…
GI (Gary Indiana) reign supreme!
I’m a solid fan of R Kelly.I’ve followed his career since he was with public announcement.I’ve seen his legacy as he overstepped guys like Keith Sweat,Baby Face,Brian Micknight and Joe Thomas.
No doubt R.Kelly is the Marvin Gaye of the 21st Century. But like the latter R.Kelly seems to have inner conflict between the good and the bad..ie booty vs you saved me.A lot of his frustrations are rooted in the fact that the American society is very fickle. It can love you today but sharn you tommorrow.R Kelly has never been appreciated.Awards houses have never given him the recognition he deserves.A lot of American comedians and musicians have already deemed him quilty before his rape case is decided by the law.
Without playing too much defence on his side i think that Kells is taking a decline in his career. Its almost like he wants to be a rapper now..hence thats why he calls himself an R&B thug.A lot of this comes from the fact that hip-hop is dominating musically.Another reason is that hip-hop allows people to say how they feel about one another.Rappers like Nas and lately 50 cent have sang hating songs on him and his frustrations are clearly shown on the intro track..the champ..in his latest cd..the double up album.
As a die-hard fan i wish R.Kelly can overcome his problems and focus on his career. His two last cds..TP3 reloaded and double up do not reflect a growing artist. Its almost like his focus is nothing but sales now.I wish you find your way back Kells.
Oh and by the way..there will never be any like him.If you don’t believe me check out the light it up tour dvd.R.Kelly is a genius! He just needs to get his prioties right.
Honestly, I have always found a way to like even some of R. Kelly’s worst music but I can’t in this case. It’s almost like he began his career as an adult singer and has now reverted into an old man who’s trying to be cool.
TP2.com had to of been his best CD of all. There’s no doubting his great voice, but it’s obvious the guy has lost the passion.
Hi !! Ever wanted to visit Antarctica?
I don’t wanna say anything about Kels,so I’ma let him do the talkin’…and by the South Africa loves Kelly………..
