Rap-Up had the chance to hear 11 tracks off Common’s highly anticipated seventh album Finding Forever due out July 10th. The private listening was held in Los Angeles for about 15 people. Common was in attendance fresh off his appearance on Oprah earlier in the week. Kanye West was also there. Common and Kanye played each track and then spoke about it. Kanye, who Common referred to as ‘Ye throughout the listening, produced the majority of the album which also features production by the late J Dilla. Dwele, Lily Allen, Bilal, and D’Angelo are some of the featured guests.
Be took Common to a new level of commercial success and Finding Forever will put him over the top. After listening to this album, it’s apparent why Common is one of the most prolific rappers out today. Common spoke about his disappointment after losing all five awards he was up for at this year’s Grammys. We bet that he will be collecting Grammys for this album next year. Check out our track by track preview of what will undoubtedly be one of the year’s best rap albums.
1. “The People” featuring Dwele
Produced by Kanye West
“The People” is the first single off Finding Forever and it’s one of our favorite tracks on the album. It’s a declaration of people struggling through everyday life set to a head-bobbing beat that has the potential to be a radio hit. Common calls the song a “declaration of who is.” Dwele sings on the hook, which has been sped up in typical Kanye fashion. Dwele sings, “By the people, for the people…Good days have come to stay.” Common raps, “The people said I was sharp, at the Grammys they tried to India.Arie me.” This is a reference to Common getting nominated for five Grammys this year for Be and not winning any like India.Arie with her seven nominations in 2002. Another sample lyric: “Can’t leave rap alone the streets need me.” Kanye made the beat in Australia when he was on tour.
2. “Black Maybe” featuring Bilal
Produced by Kanye West
Kanye sampled a Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright song for “Black Maybe.” A midtempo number with what Kanye calls a “soul authentic” beat. He made this with the late J Dilla in mind with respect to the chopping of the beat. Common explains that this track deals with struggles because of color and beyond. The struggles can come from your own nationality. Kids don’t get the opportunity because of the way they were born. The songs starts off by saying, “I heard a white man’s yes is a black man’s maybe.” Bilal sings on the chorus which goes like this: “Can’t come around, they gon’ wanna put me down, doin’ dope and doin’ time…black maybe.” It ends with a spoken word about race set to the beat of bongos.
3. “I Want You”
Produced by will.i.am
Common calls this his “love joint.” Reminiscent of “Go” dealing with his attraction to a woman. Hard drum beat with a hook that sounds like Imogen Heap from the pop group Frou Frou. Common first heard the beat when he and will.i.am were working on the Gap holiday commercial. He told will.i.am that he had to have it. Sample lyrics: “Thinkin’ about your love, I need another dose.”
4. “Southside” featuring Kanye West
Produced by Kanye West
You may have heard this song by now. It was originally released around this year’s Super Bowl to support the Chicago Bears and was used in an NFL commercial. The song sounds great when it’s performed live. Kanye is the only rapper rapping on Common’s album. The song has a rock edge with an electric guitar. Kanye raps, “I’m Mike and he’s Tito.” Common describes the track as just “two Southside dudes just emceeing.” One of the album’s highlights.
5. “Drivin’ Me Wild” featuring Lily Allen
Produced by Kanye West
Our second favorite song off the album after “The People.” It also happens to be one of Common’s favorite songs. This should definitely be released as a single. A fun song with Lily Allen singing on the hook. She sings, “It’s this thing now that’s drivin’ me wild, I got to see what’s up before it gets me down…Love’s not a mystery, it’s everything.” Many pop culture references on the song (“Unbreakable like Bobby and Whit”), which is about people who do too much to fit in or be cool. The moral of the song: be yourself. Common talks about a girl who “be on the treadmill like OK Go, reading Us and People magazine, chasing an actor for a Bentley coupe…Rock a fur in the summer, so somebody would pet it.”
6. “So Far To Go” featuring D’Angelo
Produced by J Dilla
This was originally considered to be the “Go” remix. It’s smooth and sexual with a piano on the instrumental. Common describes it as a “wet and sexy” song. J Dilla finished this song before he passed away and Common held onto it for this album. Common calls JD “one of the greatest producers in music, an unsung hero.” JD and D’Angelo are two of his favorite artists. D’Angelo sings on the hook: “You’ve got so far to go.”
7. “Break My Heart”
Produced by Kanye West
This song had yet to be finished when we listened to it, but it’s about love and breaking a girl’s heart. “Sometimes it happens,” Common laughed. Sample lyrics: “I got my SAG card, baby, I’m an actor…You could be by my side like Flavor and Deelishis.”
8. “The Game” featuring DJ Premier
Produced by Kanye West
This one has an old school beat with record scratching by DJ Premier. Kanye talked Common into using the song on his album. It felt like a Primo beat to him. The hook goes like this: “It’s only right that I address this, gotta be in it to win it.” Common raps, “I want to be like Akeelah, an achiever.”
9. “Start the Show” featuring Kanye West
Produced by Kanye West
This will be the first song on the album. It has a thrashing beat with a snare drum. “To the top of the globe,” Kanye raps.
10. “Misunderstood”
Produced by Devo Springsteen
Kanye’s cousin Devo Springsteen produced this. He produced “Diamonds (From Sierra Leone)” with Kanye and “So High” for John Legend. Kanye sampled Nina Simone on this. Common was inspired by his friends who are good-natured, but made bad choices. He rewrote it many times before getting it right. He talks about a girl who had dreams of being a dancer, but ending up stripping and a guy who had dreams of acting, but got mixed up in the wrong crowd. The hook goes like this: “When everything goes wrong, you see some bad…Please don’t let me be misunderstood.”
11. “Forever Begins”
Produced by Kanye West
The last song on the album and a tribute to the late J Dilla. The title of the album Finding Forever is also a tribute to JD who lives on through the music. This song has an uplifting, soulful, almost spiritual feel. Drums and strings can be heard. Common raps, “We live forever through song.” Kanye is still thinking of more ideas, so more songs may be added or changed. Common says he’s trying to make timeless music that means something to society. After listening to these 11 tracks, he’s definitely accomplished this with Finding Forever.
Are you anticipating Finding Forever? Do you think this will be Common’s best effort? Will this album take Common to the next level? What is your favorite Common album? (Like Water for Chocolate was Common’s best album, imho).

so excited, its not even funny… common was just at my school a couple of weeks ago… performed “the people” and one other new one… both were sick. i def. think that common is about to take his music to a point that so few rappers seem to do these days: mainstream success while being introspective and sending a message. def. one of my favorites… and while part of me doesnt like that kanye seems to be the only one producing for him, i like how cohesive he made BE sound, so im cool w/ that. and i think i like “one day…” best from common just because of the way he uses his MCing skills and gets so deep at the same time.
Go Kayne, maybe this will make up for the Consequence album.
I’m looking forward to this album, Lupe, and Kanye. I hope this album include I have a dream as a bonus track.
I like Common, I think he looks cool, he has this whole vibe that he gives off like, yeah, power to the people, and he was not bad in that movie Smokin’ Aces but I had to throw his CD away, not because of the lyrics, but because it just didn’t sound good. I didn’t like it. I figured, okay, KW produced it, it’s gotta be good. It wasn’t. I guess it’s cause I don’t really listen to the lyrics and yeah, maybe I should, but if I’m busy doing my thinking during the day while I’m at work, I don’t want to be thinking when I’m listening to music. No agenda for me, thank you.
I was just listening to that “So Far 2 Go” track a couple of days ago. It’s on J-Dilla’s “The Shining”. I love the use of Jack Nickelson’s vocals throughout the track.
Common- One of my favs…Truly a lyrically potent talent….
ANonymous…the version with Jack Nickelson’s voice was the advance copy. On the album version, it’s gone. But ironically, it was as good fit.
I’m guessing they shook everybody down for tape recorders…where’s the genius who called his voicemail and just left a long ass message? Anyway, these descriptions definitely make me want to check for FF even more. Common is greatly underrated and in the today’s field of 2-steppers, trappers and pimps, I NEED some more G.O.O.D. music.
Has anyone heard that track “The Ambassadors” feat. Nas?
Be is a classic. Be will last forever.
“The People” is a good song, but Common just has better songs, classics songs, on Be.
Yo this is gonna be one of the best albums of this year. If it is anything close to what Be was i might just cop two, one for the ride and one for the job. Commons music is different than everyone else’s, and thats why its hot,”and what i love most is she had so much soul, i was old school and she was just a shorty, never knew throughout my life she would be there for me.”
“The people”? the best song that I’ve ever heard!!! I play it 24/7
what’s about “finding forever”.. i’m looking forward for this album because it will be greatest album than BE…. BE was good but FF is faboulous ;] ” ….
peace
Common is such a classic artist. He has been around since it all started and his songs never change. He always has the relaxed vibe, kinda jsut kicking it. He has had so many classic songs and I’m sure more will be on his 7th album “Finding Forver”. Can’t wait till this comes out. This is one you just gotta buy the cd, you can’t burn this. It’s going to be a classic. Common just keeps setting his goals higher with each album and I am sure there will be more to come. Common will last forever just like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul. He has been around since it started and he will live on. This album will be kickin’ it.
This is most likely going to be a big album,as you can tell by “the game” and “the people”,but seriously, rap is turning into crap right now with diamonds, ladies, and cars. Its been that way for too long. Recent artists like yung joc and mims,i swear that crap is so gay,its not rap or hip or hip,and yes there is a difference. The best music (in terms of hip hop),im not putting down other genres,is underground hip hop and old school.
-Vershan
Common taps into that rare place that many Artists would not dare dive into…. his soul. Hip Hop is changing with the hustling theme being overused, Snap music, and quick get money songs (with verses and hooks repeated) that reminds me of fast food instead of real cooking. I do not care how many soul samples you have, if the lyrics are not soulful or on point like original emceeing, the people are going to know its fake. Common poetically masters tracks with creativity and precision, its amazing to hear the new jewels he brings to the table every time. Especially with Kanye on the boards. Finding Forever will be a Classic like Be was, because Com is still hungrier than ever, yet humble (thats saying something). Give him the recognition he needs Source and XXL should rate it a classic!!!!
my fiance from chicago. you would think she know how to get the shit early. awready got my twenty on deck for the drop date. aint been this excited about a hip-hop album since outkast, speakerboxxx/love below. BE still hittin’!
Finding Forever seems to be betwen “Can I Borrow A Dollar?” and “Electric Circus.” The hunger of MCing for the former (his MC skills naturally dipped, but like MJ’s basketball skill in the same age-not much), with the organic looseness of the album’s theme in the latter.
Common is gonna get Indie.Arie’d again in 2008-by Kanye (again). Kanye’s Graduation album is gonna eat up a good deal of the votes for hip-hop awards the Grammys, with 50 Cent eating a sizable portion of any remaining awards if the 3 MCs get nominated for the same category. But then again, the Nobel Prize in Medicine probobly has more credibility in hip-hop than a Grammy.
I’m definately anticipating commons new album(FINDING FOREVER). I love every album he’s came out with. Even though I didn’t like Electric Circut that much as much as all the others. I still approve of it cus dats my guy. CHI-TOWN BABY!!!
peace: 3rd Son…..
Best common album…..like water for chocolate….FF is gonna be nice…not his best. I esp love electric circus..I hated it at first then I started to listen to the album and how it was so new and original..dont sleep on electric circus…
I agree many people sleep on electric circus… i loved when i first heard it. FF is going to be dope, i just wish he would have had more Dilla(rip)tracks on it. But kanye is doing a good job he actually impress me on be and on the few cuts i heared off this new album..
been a Common fan since “Can I Borrow a Dollar” was on repeat in my walkman..he had a catchy style and used great beats and has evolved into 1 of the best emcees in the game today..cant wait for Finding Forever but Im not sure if it can outdo “Be”..
Finding Forever will get my dollas!!!
Common’s “Finding Forever” is sitting on my desk as i write this. Common name drops at least three times per song, which is tolerable but combined with the numerous pop culture references it only adds to my over all disappointment with this album. Don’t get me wrong there are a few good cuts. “Forever Begins” , “So Far to Go” , “The Game”…but they aren’t strong enough to carry the album to the Grammys. This album falls right inline behind Be just in front of Electric Circus.
“I Want You” has to be the worst cut on the album. Here is a snippet of some lyrics form “I Want You” you make the call. “the scent of the room that reminds me of you, a hint of perfume that reminds me of you, take a look at the moon it reminds me of you, hope the stars and the gods align me and you” hmmm interesting here’s some more “it’s kind of like the break up between Jenn and Vince Vaughn”
“Break My Heart” is the second worst song on the album. Try this on for size, “you look like you rap where is your bling-gaye, and your clothes is tight but you don’t seem gay, i said naw thats the dude from N’syc-gaye , she wasn’t married she kept her ring on her pink-gaye”
This album will probably get a Grammy nod but there are tons of other artist that could use one.
Bored check these out: Blue Scholars - Bayani, Surreal & DJ Balance - Future Classic, Red Cloud - Hawthorne’s Most Wanted
I saw the commercial for the album last night on MTV and my heart almost stopped. You know when you see that beautiful lady who litteraly takes your breath away. Thats exactly how I felt when i saw the commercial that contains snippets of “the People” video. I mean there just aint no body, I mean nobody!!!, who has done it like Common. Every album has been classic. Not because it had radio hits or went platnum or gold. Just because every album was different, inventive, creative, definatley never the same as what was playing on the radio at the time. He has never tried to sell out. And it’s about time he starts getting the recognition he diserves. Money’s been doing it tight since before Nas or Jay-Z. Before Biggie, who must be the rapper all these kids today look back at as a legend. Common is a legend. One of the last MC’s from that golden era that is still doing it Big Big. Alot of my favorite mc’s have dropped albums in the last couple of years that have disappointed me, but Common never comes week. When I heard Be was produced by Kanye, I had my doubts (Hate that big headed chipmunk), but it seems that Common had a bigger influence on Kanye. All the tracks were banging, and I kept saying was “damn, this cats killing it Like back on Resurection” (my favorite album, Wordplay on that album can not be touched).
So now I’m going crazy checking every review, and noticing that alot of cats don’t know what time it realy is with Rahsheed Lonnie Lynn. This cat has worked dum hard to be the great mature artist that he is, and he still loves this coulture so much that he wont make wack radio songs to attract new fans who have no idea about the coulture. He is putting out true hip-hop, and just good old music.
Cant wait till july 31.
Definite classic! This has quickly become my favorite album of 2007 (thus far). Feel free to listen to it in its entirety.
I think this album will be the album of the year. I plan on leaving Revival at church tonight, eating a late snack, and then being at the store by midnight. I’ve been on Common for a minute now, and the one thing that he does that most rappers don’t do today is…. RAP !!! I know that’s funny but, he gives you music with substance. I guess he knows that most people who listen to music already know how to ’snap their fingers’… and do a ‘two-step’ ! Being an undercover artist myself, his music is immeasurably inspirational to me. It almost makes me wanna put my music out there (Music’s current state of trash and carbon copy style is the only thing holding me back). I’m predicting “Misunderstood” to be on George Bush’s IPOD… one day !
Freedom music for The People!!!
I’M A HUGE COMMON FAN!!…CHI-TOWN REPRESENTA!!…THIS ALBUM IS BEAUTIFULLY ORCHESTRATED…EACH ALBUM YOU SEE HIS BRILLIANCE EVOLVE YET ONCE MORE. HE IS THE GURU OF STORYTELLING. BIG UPS TO COMMON SENSE!!!!
