Another Ho-Confessional

Nas’s baby momma, least known as Carmen Bryan, visited the Wendy Williams show earlier this week to promote her tawdry tell-all book about her affairs (well flings) with Nas, Jay-Z, and Allen Iverson. Carmen tries to liken herself to a “Hip Hop Helen of Troy”, but she’s really just a slut. I’m sick of people talking about, “why can men do it but women can’t?”. The fact of the matter is, women have to a duty to conduct themselves with a certain amount of respect and dignity. The so-called war didn’t start when Jay-Z or Nas made a song about her, it started when she decided to spread her legs for a dude other than the one she was engaged to. If she hadn’t been hoeing around with Jay-Z and AI, they wouldn’t have had any fuel for the fodder. As a result, I don’t have any sympathy or compassion for her, nor do I feel like she has any kind of compelling right to “set the record straight”. I’ve read the chapters that have been leaked, and it seems like she’s trying to romanticize her flings, when it’s hard to believe she was more than a jump-off. Clearly this chick is seriously delusional and she has major issues with her value system.

What do you guys think? Did Nas & Jay’s outting of her entitle her to write this tell-all? Is she wrong for exposing intimate (and not so flattering) details about her life? Is this exploitation? If she messed with anyone else would anyone really care? Post your thoughts.

Videos Galore

First up is Nas with a new video for his first single, Hip Hop Is Dead. Instead of the usual flashy cars and booty shaking videos that pervade BET, Nas’ video has a black panther type feel. I dig the video…it’s certainly not a club banger, but a good indication that his album (as usual) is going to be about good music rather than flash in the pan catchy singles.

Beyonce has a totally pointless video for her song, Listen, off the Dreamgirls soundtrack. Do we really need to see another video of just Beyonce singing to the camera the entire time? As much as I’m a fan of her musically, she consistently fails to deliver an original or inspiring video.

Fantasia returns to the music scene with her video, Hood Boy, featuring Big Boi from Outkast. The song is semi-catchy and the video has an interesting look. She has a lot of eye candy in the video, but other than that there’s nothing to hold your attention.

Another round of Album Previews

Gwen Stefani offers an eclectic mix of songs on her new album, Sweet Escape. Much like her new look, her album has a very eighties sound. I wouldn’t be able to stand listening to it in one sitting more than once, but her album is original, zany, and enjoyable.

Dumb and Dumber-oops I mean- The Ying Yang Twins are back with a new album, Chemically Imbalanced. In the intro they proclaim the first half is strictly for the hard-core Ying Yang fans (read: a$$ shakers) and the second half is more musical. To be honest, their attemtps at making real music are laughable…however, they deliver on brainless booty-shaking anthems.

The Clipse return 4 years after their debut album with the hard-hitting, Hell Hath No Fury. Pharrell’s production complements their style more than any other artists he works with. I’ll let more of a hip hop head chime in with their two cents on how good this album is…in the meantime, check it out for yourself.

Ludacris Gets Deep…For Once

Ludacris switches gears with his new video for Runaway Love, featuring Mary J. Blige. Instead of the playful rhymes we’re used to him spitting, he delivers powerful storytelling about the trials of young girls. Although part of me wants to dog him for talking about b’s and hoes in every other song, then turning around and trying to deliver a heartfelt message to girls in trouble…I can’t help but give him credit for coming out with a mature and sincere song. Mary J. sounds fantastic on the song. The video is super depressing, but it features superb acting (I know that sounds like an exaggeration but watch) by Akeelah & the Bee star, Keke Palmer.

Trina, Sit Your A$$ Down!

I spotted this abomination of acting over at Crunk & Disorderly. Clearly, Trina has no true friends, because nobody told her that her acting is a hot a$$ mess! Everyone in the video needs an acting coach and a speech coach! I’ve never seen supposedly literate people have such trouble enunciating ordinary words.

Will Blacks Stop Using the N-Word in Entertainment?

(From the Associated Press)

Black leaders on Monday challenged the entertainment industry, including rappers, to stop use of the racial slur that Michael Richards uttered in his tirade.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and others said they will meet with TV networks, film companies and musicians to discuss the “n-word.”

“We want to give our ancestors a present,” Jackson said at a news conference. “Dignity over degradation.”

At the press conference, comedian Paul Mooney said he has used the “n-word” numerous times during stand-up performances but will no longer do so after watching Richards’ rant.

“He’s my Dr. Phil,” the black comedian said. “He’s cured me.”
My personal take on this is that it would be a good thing for black people to stop using the word in entertainment. It’s one thing to use it amongst each other, but it’s another thing when it’s being turned into this mainstream thing to do. It’s disturbing to be in an arena that is predominately white and have the crowd singing/rapping the word along with the songs. It’s even more disturbing in intimate settings like comedy clubs when comedians use it, and you realize that white people in the audience are laughing at us not with us. It’s one of those things where we have to be responsible and accountable for how we want to be treated. If we want to demand a certain amount of respect, we need to conduct ourselves in a way that warrants it. I’m sure that most people will continue to use the word in entertainment, but it would be refreshing if some people did heed Rev. Jackson’s call.

New Video for Pac’s Life

Here is the new video for the song, Pac’s Life, from Tupac’s just released Pac’s life cd. For some odd reason, Ashanti keeps getting picked to spread her wackness on Tupac’s songs. I’m not an Ashanti hater, but her voice just makes the song sound a little corny. The song also features T. I., who adds a nice flavor to the mix.
